Another weekend is here!  Get out and enjoy all the fun events happening this weekend in NYC!

Friday August 21st

Mil’s Trills at the Brooklyn Public Library (Gerritsen Beach Library)
Friday August 21st 2-3p.  Free.  For ages 3-11y.  Celebrate the community with Mil’s Trills in an interactive concert of quirky original tunes led by Amelia Robinson on her electric ukulele and her troupe of musical guests!

Movies @ the Library: Dolphin Tale 2 at the Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army Plaza)
Friday August 21st 230-5p.  Free.  Location: Dweck Center.  The inspiring true story of Winter isn’t over.  Several years after receiving a prosthetic tail, Winter loses her surrogate mother, leaving her alone, grieving and unwilling to engage with anyone, even her best human friend, Sawyer.  Worse, she may have to be moved from her home at the aquarium due to regulations requiring dolphins to be paired.  When Dr. Clay Haskett and his dedicated team can’t find her a companion, it looks like they may lose their beloved Winter, until an unexpected turn of events brings them Hope (2014, PG, 107 minutes).

SummerStarz Movies: Sound of Music in WNYC Transmitter Park
Friday August 21st 7-10p.  Free.  Movie starts at sunset around 730p.  Come on out to WNYC Transmitter Park on the gorgeous Greenpoint waterfront. Bring a picnic blanket, friends & family. Come early and have an awesome time!  The feature movie on Friday, August 21 is Sound of Music, about a woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become the governess to seven children of a Naval officer widower.  Come dressed as your favorite character!

Coney Island Fireworks
Friday August 21st 930p.  Last chance to see the fireworks until next summer!  Free.  For the best seating, locate yourself on the boardwalk or beach between West 10th Street and West 15th Street.

Saturday August 22nd

The Art Yard in Madison Square Park (Flatiron)
Saturday August 22nd 9a-12n.  Last day!  Free.  For ages 1-12y.   Adult supervision is required and promptness is encouraged.  Learn a new skill and spark your creativity at The Art Yard, the new Mad. Sq. Kids workshop series designed for kids aged 1-12.  Join Mad. Sq. Kids as we host some of the best independent visual and performing artists.  August 22 – Fata Morgana Family Art Workshop

Arty Hours at the High Line (Chelsea)
Saturdays 10a-12n until August 22nd.  Free.  Location: 23rd Street Lawn.  Arty Hours is a drop-in program (no RSVP required), and is open to kids ages 4+ accompanied by caregivers. Up, down, and all around from 30 feet in the air!  Bbe inspired by what you’ll see from and on the High Line during Arty Hours. Kids and their caregivers are invited to take advantage of our unique view of the city and surrounding area and create art that is inspired by site-specific works from Panorama, a High Line Art group exhibition. At each Arty Hour, young builders can create one-of-a-kind vehicles, forts, structures, and machines with the High Line Children’s Workyard Kit, a crate of kid-friendly planks, nuts, bolts, and other custom materials by industrial designer Cas Holman.  In the event of rain or lawn closure, Arty Hours will take place in the 14th Street Passage.  August 15: Memory Sculptures ~ Make a sculpture that reminds you of a special place. Inspired by Window, by Andro Wekua.

The Hans Christian Andersen Storytelling Center in Central Park (UES)
Saturdays in August & September 11a-12n.  Free.  Rain or shine.  72nd St. & 5th Ave.  On Saturdays all summer long for more than 50 years, New York children have gathered around Hans Christian Andersen’s statue at the Conservatory Pond in Central Park to hear his tales told by a fine ensemble of storytellers. See website for the schedule of stories and story tellers.  Appropriate for children ages 6 and up.  Fun for Adults as well.  Children are asked to sit with parents or guardians.  August 22nd: The Snow Queen told by Ron Sopyla and The Three Aunts told by Rita Auerbach

Hudson River Park’s Blues BBQ at Pier 26 (Tribeca)
Saturday August 22nd 2-9p rain or shine.  Free.  Moving to its new, larger home at Pier 26, Hudson River Park’s Blues BBQ Festival returns for the 16th season! Pairing America’s best Blues and Roots musicians with New York City’s best BBQ restaurants, makes for an unforgettable summer day on the Hudson River!  2015 Blues BBQ Artists: Otis Taylor Band, Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens, Jarekus Singleton, Vaneese Thomas, The Ed Palermo Big Band featuring Jimmy Vivino and Felix Cabrera.  See the website for more information.

Bargemusic in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Saturdays 4p until August 29th. Free. Visit Bargemusic for their free Neighborhood Family Concerts. This one-hour performance includes a Q & A session with the musicians. Doors open 15 minutes before the performance – no reserved seating is available.

Sunday August 23rd

Pier 5 Family Field Day in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Sundays August 23rd 10a-2p.  Free.  Join us on Pier 5 to play an assortment of games from potato sack and Hula hoop races to parachute games to learning soccer skills and even scrimmage games!

Battle of Brooklyn Monuments Tour at the Lefferts Historic House (Prospect Park)
Sunday August 23rd 11a–1p.  $3 suggested donation.  Join the Alliance for a guided tour from the Lefferts Historic House down East Drive to view some of Prospect Park’s Revolutionary War Monuments. Hear accounts of the battle as remembered by Femmetie Lefferts and tour the home she built with her husband Pieter Lefferts. This tour leaves promptly at 11 am.

Family Performance Festival: The Case of the Missing Chipmunk in Central Park (UWS)
Sundays at 12n until September 6th.  Free.  All ages welcome.  Programs between 60-90 minutes long.  Programs happen near the most natural playground, the Great Hill  (located inside the Park near West 106th Street). Pack a picnic, grab your blanket, and get ready to discover Central Park in a whole new way!  In the case of inclement weather, programs will be canceled. For weather-related changes and accessibility information, call 212-208-4111 or check the event on our online calendar.  August 22nd: The Case of the Missing Chipmunk ~ When a chipmunk goes missing, only one detective is clever enough, brave enough, and smart enough to solve the case – Mystery Max! Of course, he’ll need your help, too! Join Max on a wild adventure to find Central Park’s missing chipmunks. Along the way we’ll meet crazy characters, make new friends, sing songs and find clues. Family Sundays at Rubin Museum Of Art (Chelsea)
Sundays drop-in anytime between 1pm and 4pm.  Free with paid admission.  Ages 3 and up with accompanying adults.  Sundays are for families! Bring your family to the Museum for a Sunday afternoon full of family-friendly activities. Drop into the Education Center for some art making, enjoy our 2:00 p.m. family exhibition tour, or go on your own thematic gallery search.  August Sundays: Himalayan Woodblock Printing ~ Woodblock printing has a long and rich history in the Himalayan region. Explore printed artworks and common design motifs in the collection and drop by the art studio to create your own woodblock printed fabric!

Movie Night: Footloose (1984) at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)
Sunday August 23rd 8p.  Free.  Come out and enjoy a movie outdoors! Footloose (1984): A city teenager moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace. (IMDB) Rated PG 107 minutes.  See website for future movie titles.

All Weekend

Family Discovery Weekends at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Crown Heights)
Saturdays & Sundays 1030a-230p until August 23rd.  Free with Garden admission.  This is a drop-in program for families with children of all ages.  Stop by the pavilion to create a nature-based craft, artwork, or invention.  Experiment, learn, and play together in the Discovery Garden. Hands-on stations throughout the garden’s meadow, woodland, and marsh habitats, and in the vegetable garden encourage families to explore nature together. All programs are outdoors and canceled in inclement weather; for updates, call 718-623-7200, ext. 7801.  See website for additional days in the fall.

FringeJR shows at the 14th Street Y (Stuyvesant Town/East Village)
Friday-Sunday August 21st-August 30th at various times.  The FringeJr productions are specifically recommended for families and groups with children ages five (5) to twelve (12). $13 FringeJR tickets will be available to the youngsters for all FringeJR shows and may only be purchased in person: Either in advance (the day before the performance) at FringeCENTRAL (cash or credit card), or at the box office where the show is playing 15 minutes prior to curtain (credit card only).  Productions this year: The Commedia Rapunzel, Haunted Holliot Hildorf Hotel and Shadow’s Unicycle, Ideas, Not Theories, PEDRO PAN, Rapunzel in the Wild West and Solina.  See website for tickets and times.

Battle Week – the 239th Commemoration of the Largest Battle of the Revolutionary War (various locations)
Saturday August 22nd-Sunday August 30th.  Some events have fees.  See website for location details and schedule information.  A week of events and activities commemorating the opening chapter in America’s drive for independence.

Danny Weinkauf and His Red Pants Band at the Bronx Zoo
Saturday-Sunday August 22nd-23rd at 1230p, 2p and 330p at Grizzly Corner (by the bears).  Free with zoo admission.  Danny Weinkauf is the man behind the wildly successful They Might Be Giants mega-hit “I am a Paleontologist,” and a Grammy-winning artist. He’s just released his first solo album for kids and will be performing at the zoo! We can’t wait to hear the upbeat, “shiny pop” tunes about marsupials, archaeology, and more, including the chart-topping hit “Champion of the Spelling Bee.”

Open Studio for Families at the Whitney Museum of American Art (Meatpacking District/West Village)
Fridays-Sundays in August until the 23rd 1030a-3p.  Free with museum admission.  Location: Floor Three, Laurie M. Tisch Education Center, Hearst Artspace / Fifth Floor Outdoor Gallery (weather permitting).  Get creative in the Whitney’s new Hearst Artspace! Families are invited to make their own artworks inspired by works on view in the exhibition America Is Hard to See. Each week we will offer a different art making project.

Fantastic Tunnels at NY Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Saturday-Sunday August & 22nd-23rd 130-215p.  For 5y+.  Free with paid admission.  What do engineers discover as they dig deep underground to build New York’s newest train tunnels?  Find out, and then create and illustrate your own fantastic book about what YOU imagine finding beneath Manhattan’s busy streets and ancient bedrock.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Fridays 1030a & 12n and Saturdays & Sundays 1p.  See website for additional weekday show times this summer.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.

Kids Corner at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)
Saturdays & Sundays until August 30th 11a-3p. Free. Presented by Sean Meenan and Habana Works. The Kid’s Corner is a weekend program that offers free, creative workshops and crafts that teach environmentalism, wellness and community to neighborhood kids.  August 22nd & 23rd- Corn Husk Dolls

Splash Pad at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Monday-Saturday 10a-7p & Sunday 10-6p.  Free.  The Splash Pad, offically known as the Matilda Raffa Cuomo Water Playground, is the LeFrak Center’s free water play area for kids 12 and under. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the water feature welcomed over 30,000 visitors last summer. Featuring 47 water spray jets and covering 16,000 square feet, Splash Pad is largest water play area in Prospect Park. In addition, the LeFrak Center offers roller skating, the Bluestone Café, and surrounding landscapes for picnicking and relaxation.

CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island
Saturday & Sunday 11a-3p until September 27th (and Labor Day September 7).  For ages 1-15y.  Free.  Location: Outside Building 14 in Nolan Park.  Bring the whole family and join CMA’s Teaching Artists, as we spend the summer making artwork inspired by Governors Island itself! Participants will create works that show the importance of nature and parks, and our place in between those two. We will be influenced by the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, and Richard Shilling as we scavenge for what nature has to offer, collaborating with site specific installations, and showcasing interactions with the sun, trees, water, and rocks. And be prepared to exploit the creative potential of everyday trash, repurposing it away from the landfills and oceans, by making it into clever and meaningful art.  For more information on Governors Island, please visit www.govisland.com.

Pinkalicious, The Musical at Culture Project’s Lynn Redgrave Theater
Saturdays & Sundays 1p until August 30th.  Tickets: $36.50.  For ages 2 to 7y.  Pinkalicious can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe – a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of this predicament.
