Summer Children’s Garden Program in Highland Park, FringeJR shows at the 14th Street Y, Movies in the Parks: The Karate Kid (1984) in Maria Hernandez Park, “The collectivity project” for Kids on the High Line and the last First Discoveries for Toddlers at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  Also enjoy more free Brooklyn Public Library events like a Mystery Summer Reading Event at the Kensington library, Little Science with Miss Carmen at the Park Slope library, Stomp, Clap and Sing with FunikiJam at the Central library and Loud and Rowdy Tales with Julie Pasqual! at the Coney Island library.

Monday August 24th

Hudson River Park’s River Rangers Pier 25 (Tribeca)
Mondays 2-330p until August 31st.  Free. Appropriate for kids ages 4-9.  Kids explore the wonders of the Hudson River ecosystem through discovery-based science experiments and nature-inspired crafts.

Summer Reading: Mystery Event at the Brooklyn Public Library (Kensington)
Monday August 24th 230-4p.  Free.  For all ages.  Come in and enjoy facing the unknown for the final day of Summer Reading. Tickets are required!
Kids’ Yoga and Farm Exploration at Brooklyn Grange (Navy Yard)
Monday August 24th 4-6p.  Tickets: $45 for one child and their chaperone.  Each child must have their own ticket. Purchase tickets here. Designed for ages 6-9y. All children must be accompanied by one adult. Only 2 kids per adult! Children must be accompanied by their adult throughout the class; come ready to play and explore together! Please bring your own yoga mat, water bottle, sunscreen and hats.  This afternoon on the farm is designed for the littles and their caregivers, an opportunity to get bodies moving and explore the farm… and food that fuels us!  Certified kids’ yoga instructor, Rebecca Kay, will lead caregivers and kids through a 45 minute, family-friendly yoga class that fills the needs of energetic bodies, while teaching them how to slow down in the city.  Kids will be feeling great after yoga, ready for a Five Senses Farm Explore with City Growers! Walking around the farm together, kids and their caregivers will meet the chickens, discover hidden vegetables and navigate around towering sunflowers. All before enjoying a farm fresh snack together – healthy minds and healthy bellies make for happy farm friends!

Tuesday August 25th

SummerStage Kids: CityParks PuppetMobile Tales of Brier Rabbit in Kaiser Park (Coney Island)
Tuesday August 25th 1030-1130a.  Free.  The CityParks PuppetMobile’s original production, Tales of Brier Rabbit, follows the adventures of notorious trickster Brier Rabbit, who is once again up to no good. Deceiving and stealing from his fellow animal friends, Brier Rabbit thinks he’s much too clever to ever get caught. However, in this modern adaptation of the American folk tale, Brier Rabbit’s pals are on to his tricks, and set out to teach him a lesson he won’t soon forget!

Stomp, Clap and Sing with FunikiJam at the Central Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army Plaza)
Tuesday August 25th 11a-12n.  Free.  Weather permitting Stomp Clap & Sing will be held on the Plaza.  Join Funikijam on their Magical World Tour. This fun and musical show encourages children’s participation with award-winning musical exploration.

First Discoveries for Toddlers at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Crown Heights)
Tuesday August 25th 130-3p.  Last day!  Free with Garden admission and Garden admission is FREE on Tuesdays!  Calling all explorers 2–4 years old (and their caregivers)! Plant a carrot seed, touch a wriggly worm, nestle into a meadow nook to read a story, or create a unique nature craft at special Discovery Garden activity stations designed for toddlers. Activities rotate seasonally.  This drop-in program is designed for parents and caregivers to attend alongside their children. All programs are outdoors and canceled in inclement weather; for updates, call 718-623-7200, ext. 7801.

Wednesday August 26th

Little Science with Miss Carmen at Brooklyn Public Library (Park Slope)
Wednesday August 26th 1030-1130a.  Free.  Tickets are required and will be given out 1/2 hour before the start of the program at the reference desk.  Young scientists aged 2 1/2-5 years & their caregiver take part in fun, hands-on experiments. They will have the opportunity to explore and learn together in a supportive environment.

Summer Children’s Garden Program in Highland Park
Wednesday August 26th 2-4p.  Last week!  Children ages 7-12 are invited to a fun-filled afternoon to explore the garden and connect with nature.

Wednesdays in Teardrop Park (Battery Park City)
Wednesdays until October 28th 330-530pm.  Free.  Please note: this program is for children 5 years and older and that all art materials are provided.  School-age children are invited to join in creative art activities and spirited games in magical Teardrop Park. Art projects include painting, collage, sculpture, nature-based art projects, and more. The art portion takes place for the entire two-hour program.  Starting at 4:30pm the energetic lawn games begin. Taking advantage of the Teardrop Park landscape these group games can include dramatic play, tag, capture the flag, and running games of all sorts.  Children are invited to suggest their own ideas as well.

Thursday August 27th

Loud and Rowdy Tales with Julie Pasqual! at the Brooklyn Public Library (Coney Island)
Thursday August 27th 2-3p.  Free.  ALl ages.  Summer Reading End of Summer Celebration with Loud and Rowdy Tales with Julie Pasqual!  This performance features folktales that come from around the world that explode with colorful characters, funny surprises, and lots of fairytale fun!

Sing Along with Lucy Kalantari at ELK Cafe (Windsor Terrace)
Thursdays 4-435p.  $5/per family. Lucy sings and plays Ukulele! It’s a wonderful sing along for kids and caregivers alike.

Movies in the Parks: The Karate Kid (1984) in Maria Hernandez Park (Buswick)
Thursday August 27th 830-1030p.  Free.  Join NYC Parks for free, family-friendly movies in our city’s parks!  The Karate Kid (1984): Newly arrived in California from New Jersey, teenager Daniel (Ralph Macchio) almost immediately runs afoul of karate-trained high school bullies. He is rescued by Japanese janitor Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita), who agrees to teach Daniel how to harness karate for good instead of brutality. The film culminates in a championship karate bout, pitting Daniel against his sworn enemy Johnny (William Zabka) — the cruel and thuggish boyfriend of Ali (Elisabeth Shue), with whom Daniel has fallen in love (and vice versa).   Rated PG.

Kids’ Discovery Stations at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Crown Heights)
Tuesday-Friday 1015a-1230p until August 28th.  This docent-led, drop-in program is for families with children of all ages as well as camp groups. Free with Garden admission.  Get your hands dirty at kids’ discovery stations throughout the Garden. Investigate a mystery plant, hold a water plant and learn how it floats, or go on a pollinator hunt in the meadow! All programs are outdoors and canceled in inclement weather; for updates, call 718-623-7200, ext. 7801.

FringeJR shows at the 14th Street Y (Stuyvesant Town/East Village)
Tuesday August 25th-Sunday August 30th at various times.  The FringeJr productions are specifically recommended for families and groups with children ages five (5) to twelve (12). $13 FringeJR tickets will be available to the youngsters for all FringeJR shows and may only be purchased in person: Either in advance (the day before the performance) at FringeCENTRAL (cash or credit card), or at the box office where the show is playing 15 minutes prior to curtain (credit card only).  Productions this year: The Commedia Rapunzel, Haunted Holliot Hildorf Hotel and Shadow’s Unicycle, Ideas, Not Theories, PEDRO PAN, Rapunzel in the Wild West and Solina.  See website for tickets and times.

$1 Movies at NYC Regal Theaters (various locations)
Tuesdays & Wednesdays 10a until August 26th.  Family fun movies playing on Tuesdays & Wednesdays for the summertime.  Admission to these movies during the Summer Movie Express is only $1. Tickets must be purchased at the theater and all movies start at 10:00 am. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Will Rogers Institute. “The collectivity project” for Kids on the High Line
Tuesdays & Thursdays now through September 4-6p.  Free.  Location: West 30th Street.  Build, play, and dream about cities using LEGOs and your imagination. Led by a High Line Educator, these special programs just for families are part of Olafur Eliason’s The collectivity project.

Splash Pad at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Mon-Sat: 10a-7p & Sun: 10a-6p.  Free.  Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting.  The Splash Pad, officially known as the Matilda Raffa Cuomo Water Playground, is the LeFrak Center’s free water play area for kids 12 and under. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the water feature welcomed over 30,000 visitors last summer. Featuring 47 water spray jets and covering 16,000 square feet, Splash Pad is largest water play area in Prospect Park. In addition, the LeFrak Center offers roller skating, the Bluestone Café, and surrounding landscapes for picnicking and relaxation.

Art in the Park in Madison Square Park (Flatiron)
Mondays & Wednesdays 10a-2p until September 30th.  No sessions on the last Monday of each month (7/27, 8/31 & 8/28).  Free.  The Mad. Sq. Park Teaching Artist can be found in the Moira Ann Smith Playground each Monday and Wednesday from June 1 – September 30 with free hands-on creative arts activities at 10am and 2pm. Children are encouraged to participate in free flowing art-based activities. Adult supervision is required.

Summer Art in the Park in Riverside Park (UWS)
Monday-Friday now until August 28th 10a-12n.  Free.  Location: Hippo Playground.  For all ages.  No registration required.  This popular summertime favorite will return to Hippo Playground this summer.  Please join us each weekday for this enriching art program.  The class will take place at the picnic tables in the playground.  In the event of rain, the program will be held in the park house.

Jeppe Hein: Please Touch the Art at Brooklyn Bridge Park
Open daily 6a-1a until April 17, 2016.  Free.  Visitors entering the park at Pier 1 will encounter Hein’s iconic water sculpture, Appearing Rooms installed on the Bridge View Lawn. Vertical jets of water will gradually appear forming seven-foot-tall “walls”, which moments later will disappear, enabling visitors to move to different “rooms”, all without touching a drop of water. Systematically, these “walls” appear and disappear through a timed cycle, enticing visitors to step onto the gridded platform and move from space to space within the sculpture. The cycle of changing walls may also be observed from outside the piece as a dynamic and perceptually engaging work of art.  The second major component of the exhibition is a newly conceived, large-scale Mirror Labyrinth to be installed at the Pier 3 Greenway Terrace.  The third body of work, Modified Social Benches, will be on view throughout the park,surprising visitors with each chance encounter.  See website fore the full descriptions of the art.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Monday-Friday 1030a & 12n and also 230p on Wednesdays in August.  See website for weekend showtimes.   Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.
