Weekend Events in Brooklyn & NYC: September 4th-7th

Labor Day weekend is here!  Enjoy the long weekend with your friends and family and if you are in NYC this weekend there are lots of fun events!

This weekend check out the Back to School Bash 2015 at Habana Outpost, 23rd Annual Great North River Tugboat Race & Competition at Pier 84, City Splash at Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Labor Day at Lefferts Historic House, The Hans Christian Andersen Storytelling in Central Park, Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, the Junior Carnival Parade, the Back-2-School Jam at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Coney Island Fireworks, the New York Caribbean Carnival Parade 2015, Summer on the Hudson: West Side County Fair in Riverside Park South Pier I and Brazilian Day New York 2015.

Also happening all weekend is Beauty & the Beast at PuppetWorks, the NYC Unicycle Festival on Governors Island, The Pop Ups at the Bronx Zoo, Pop-Up Audubon: Radical Raptors in Prospect Park and the Richmond County Fair,

Friday September 4th

Back-2-School Jam at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum (crown Heights)
Friday September 4th 11a-3p.  All programs are included with the price of Museum Admission.  Join us at the 10th Annual Back to School Jam, Building Strong Families: I live here, I work here, I play here, celebrating the start of the school year and the milestone of entering kindergarten. Children and families will enjoy a fun filled event with back to school crafts, snacks, music, giveaways and more.   There will be events all day like an ambulance tour, fire truck tour, bouncy house, circle time and much more.  See the website for the full schedule of events.  Also note The Museum is closed for annual maintenance from: Tuesday, September 8–Friday, September 18, 2015. The Museum will reopen on Saturday, September 19, 2015

Movies @ the Library: Brave at the Brooklyn Public Library (Greenpoint)
Friday September 4th 330-5p.  Brave: Rated PG :Merida, the impetuous, but courageous, daughter of Scottish King Fergus and Queen Elinor,is a skilled archer who wants to carve out her own path in life. Her defiance of an age-old tradition angers the Highland lords and leads to chaos in the kingdom. Merida seeks help from an eccentric witch, who grants her an ill-fated wish. Now, Merida must discover the true meaning of courage and undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Target Free First Friday Nights at Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Friday September 4th 5-8p.  Free.  On the first Friday of every month admission is free from 5 – 8pm, sponsored by Target.

Coney Island Fireworks
Friday September 4th 930p.  Free.  Enjoy the last free fireworks of the summer!  For the best seating, locate yourself on the boardwalk or beach between West 10th Street and West 15th Street.

Saturday September 5th

Junior Carnival Parade (Crown Heights)
Saturday September 5h 9a-4p.  Free parade.  $2 admission at Museum gate.  Thousands of children and families enjoy music and “jump-up” while competing in their own costume parade.  Route begins at corner of Kingston Avenue & St. Joh’s Place continues to Franklin Avenue & President Street ending at the Brooklyn Museum grounds.

Opening Day of The Butterfly Conservatory at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)
Saturday September 5th 10a-5p.  Included in General Admission Plus One tickets.  This annual favorite features up to 500 live, free-flying tropical butterflies from South, Central, and North America, Africa, and Asia. Housed in a vivarium that approximates their natural habitat with live flowering plants, species include iridescent blue morpho butterflies, striking scarlet swallowtails, and large owl butterflies. Check out illustrated displays throughout the exhibition to learn more about the evolution, life cycle, anatomy, farming, and conservation of butterflies.  Exhibit will be ongoing until May 29, 2016.

The Hans Christian Andersen Storytelling in Central Park (UES)
Saturdays September 11a-12n.  Free.  Rain or shine.  72nd St. & 5th Ave.  On Saturdays all summer long for more than 50 years, New York children have gathered around Hans Christian Andersen’s statue at the Conservatory Pond in Central Park to hear his tales told by a fine ensemble of storytellers. Saturday September 5th Red & Blue Coat told by Heather Forest and Wisdom for Sale told by Peninnah Schram.  See website for the schedule of stories and story tellers.  Appropriate for children ages 6 and up.  Fun for Adults as well.  Children are asked to sit with parents or guardians.

Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (Chinatown)
Saturday September 5th 4-10p.  Free.  Location: on Forsyth Street, between East Broadway and Division Streets. Chinatown Partnership and Chinatown B.I.D. will be hosting our second annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival during Labor Day weekend, celebrating love in Chinatown. Enjoy your stay-cation in Chinatown with fun entertainment and delicious food!  Activities include: calligraphy demo; get your name transcribed into Chinese; canvas painting; chalking on sidewalk; write your own love Chinatown message; face painting; then have your picture taken for posting and email to social media; eat fried ice cream; get mini and full moon cakes; get City ID info; register to vote; sample honey water; noodles; bakery; food; Northern and Southern cuisines; Yeon; healthcare and beauty information; AiImage; dance to the rhythm of Zumba and much much more!

Sunday September 6th

23rd Annual Great North River Tugboat Race & Competition at Pier 84 (Hell’s Kitchen, Midtown West)
Sunday September 6th 10a-2p.  Free.  Location:  West 44th Street & Hudson River.  Schedule of events: 10a Parade of Tugs from Pier 84 (w 44th st./hudson river park) to the start line @ Pier I at w 70th st. in Riverside Park South. 1030a race starts and runs from Pier I to Pier 84, 11a Nose to nose pushing contests and line toss competition, 12p amateur line-toss & spinach eating contests, 1p Awards ceremony. Tugs depart at about 2 PM.

Film Forum Jr. Sunday Matinee Series at the Film Forum (South Village)
Sundays September 6th-December 27th 11a.  All tickets $7.50. Advance tickets on sale at the box office and online.  Classics For Kids and Their Families!  Sunday September 6th:  On the Town:  (1949, Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen) “New York, New York” warble gobs Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin throughout their dazzling all-location-shot opening montage, eventually cavorting from the Bronx to the Battery with “Miss Turnstiles” Vera-Ellen, man-hungry cabbie Betty Garrett and passionate paleontologist Ann Miller. Brazilian Day New York 2015 (Little Brazil)
Sunday September 6th 12n-6p.  Free.  Brazilian Day New York is an annual Brazilian street fair in Manhattan’s Little Brazil (46th Street between Fifth & Sixth Ave).  On September 6th, 2015, during Labor Day weekend, it will take place in New York the 31st edition of Brazilian Day, one of the largest street festivals in the City’s official summer calendar.  The event has a multicultural audience of Brazilians who live in different regions of the United States and admirers of the Brazilian culture who gather together to celebrate the Independence of Brazil with music, dance, food and the warmth of the Brazilian people.

Summer on the Hudson: West Side County Fair Riverside Park South Pier I (UWS)
Sunday September 6th 1-6p.  Free.  Enjoy a full day of county fair magic in Manhattan with carnival rides and games, four awesome bands, sideshow performers, aerialists, reptile shows, local food and merchandise vendors, cotton candy, and more!  Summer on the Hudson will be using wristbands for access to rides and games this year – visit one of four wristband stations to get yours!  See the website for entertainment information.

Monday September 7th

City Splash at Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Monday 10a-5p. For all ages. Free with museum admission.  Really make a splash at CMOM!  Last day!  When the weather turns warm, our City Splash exhibit encourages children of all ages to explore and learn more about our environment and the unique properties of water in a fun, hands-on setting.  Launch boats down a winding stream. Don’t miss the puddle patch, where you can investigate tubs filled with water to learn which objects float and which ones sink. Learn about evaporation as you paint with water on slate. Experiment with sand to create rivers and lakes at our new Erosion Table. Regardless of what you choose to do, you’re in for a day of wet and wonderful fun and learning at City Splash!

Back to School Bash 2015 at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)
Monday September 7th 11a-2p.  Free.  Don’t miss Habana Works 8th Annual Back To School Bash @ Habana Outpost!  The event is free and so are all of the giveaway goodies like notebooks, pencils, rulers, and much much more! We have amazing sponsors who have partnered with us during the event like NYk!ds club, and the Brooklyn Public Library and much more!  We hope you can join us this year.

New York Caribbean Carnival Parade 2015 (Crown Heights)
Monday September 7th 11a-6p.  Free.  One the famed Eastern Parkway Cultural Row!  A Caribbean cultural extravaganza known as NYC’s “Greates Show on Earth”, this colorful Parade of costumed revlers and millions of spectators enjoy music, camaraderie, fun, food and family as they “Jump-up” to the scintillating sounds of Soca, Reggae, Salso, Zouk, Kompa and Calypso!

Labor Day at Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park
Monday September 7th 2-4p.  $3 Suggested donation.  Get out and get moving in the Lefferts yard! The whole family can participate in potato sack races, spoon races, stilts and other old-fashioned games.

All Weekend

NYC Unicycle Festival on Governors Island
Saturday-Sunday August 5th-6th 12n-5p.  Location: Colonel Row.  Free.  NYC’s Unicycle Festival rolls across New York City this September. Activities include races, competitions, exhibitions, and a variety of unicycle sports including basketball, hockey and sumo. For fans of extreme riding, the Hell on Wheel trials course challenges riders throughout the day. World-famous riders display their skills, and members of the public have the opportunity to try one-wheel riding. DJ Sky King keeps the one-wheel tempo rocking. Richmond County Fair (Staten Island)
Saturday-Monday August 5th-7th 11a-5p.  Rain or shine. Adults and Children over 30″  $16, Seniors 65 and older $11, Children 30″ and under – FREE!  The biggest & oldest county fai in NYC.  Fun for all ages.  Real Americana! Music, entertainment, aumusement rides, historic exhibits, demonstrations, country crafts, contests, daring acts, petting zoo & fair food!

Pop-Up Audubon: Radical Raptors in Prospect Park
Saturday-Sunday September 5th-27th 10a-3p.  Free.  Location: Zucker Natural Exploration Area.  Learn what makes birds of prey so radical and learn about different species of raptors that migrate through Prospect Park.  Nature Play, 10–2 pm: Join Alliance naturalists and learn to appreciate the beauty of nature and develop self-reliance, creativity and problem-solving skills through different outdoor play-based activities. Program includes opportunities to dissect an owl pellet and paint with mud!  Nature’s Helpers, 1 pm: Did you know that trees help trees? After learning how mulch protects tree roots, spend time spreading wood chips around trees.  Family Bird Watching, 2 pm: Did you know that as an Important Bird Area, Prospect Park supports an exceptional diversity of migrating birds and is an essential stopover for about 250 species of birds? After learning how to use binoculars, participants of all ages can join Alliance Naturalists on a walk to learn how to identify these birds!
The Pop Ups at the Bronx Zoo
Saturday-Sunday September 5th-6th at 2p.  Free with zoo admission.  The Pop Ups are bringing their second Grammy-nominated album to the zoo! Join the kindie band at Grizzly Corner (by the bears) for an educational romp filled with puppets, dance routines, collages, and more! Enjoy some award-winning music and fantastic dance beats for zoo visitors of all ages.
Beauty & the Beast at PuppetWorks (Park Slope)
Saturday & Sundays September 5th-December 20th 1230p & 230p.  For ages 4+. Splash Pad at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Monday-Saturday 10a-7p & Sunday 10-6p.  Free.  The Splash Pad, offically known as the Matilda Raffa Cuomo Water Playground, is the LeFrak Center’s free water play area for kids 12 and under. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the water feature welcomed over 30,000 visitors last summer. Featuring 47 water spray jets and covering 16,000 square feet, Splash Pad is largest water play area in Prospect Park. In addition, the LeFrak Center offers roller skating, the Bluestone Café, and surrounding landscapes for picnicking and relaxation.

CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island
Saturday & Sunday 11a-3p until September 27th (and Labor Day September 7).  For ages 1-15y.  Free.  Location: Outside Building 14 in Nolan Park.  Bring the whole family and join CMA’s Teaching Artists, as we spend the summer making artwork inspired by Governors Island itself! Participants will create works that show the importance of nature and parks, and our place in between those two. We will be influenced by the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, and Richard Shilling as we scavenge for what nature has to offer, collaborating with site specific installations, and showcasing interactions with the sun, trees, water, and rocks. And be prepared to exploit the creative potential of everyday trash, repurposing it away from the landfills and oceans, by making it into clever and meaningful art.  For more information on Governors Island, please visit www.govisland.com.
