Have the children settled into school routines yet? Might be hard to get the schedules set since NYC public schools are closed Monday & Tuesday in observance of the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah.
This weekend take the kids to the beach before they officially close for the season and also enjoy the start of family programs at The Jewish Museum like the Drop-in Art Workshop: Wearable Pop Art. Fridays 930-1015a, 1030-1115a or 1130-1215p. $25/child. oin us for an interactive music class for children ages newborn to five years old and their adults. Our lively forty-five minute classes promote children’s musicality and development through singing, dancing, and playing instruments (shakers, bells, drums, and more!) Classes move through a dynamic mix of playful original songs written by its founder, Jesse Goldman, as well as timeless kids’ tunes and classic popular songs. Puppets, a giant parachute, dancing scarves, children’s stories, and other props create a playful and age-appropriate learning environment. Additionally, because our curriculum includes songs in multiple languages (principally English, Spanish, and French), children (and adults) in our classes have the opportunity to encounter new languages along the way. Classes are taught with an ethos of gentleness in safe, clean, and nurturing spaces for babies and toddlers. Our goal is to help children discover the joy of creating music with others.
Free Trial Creative Movement I at Dancewave (Park Slope)
Friday September 11th 10-1030a. For 18-26m. Free. Dancewave offers trial dance classes for students ages 18 mos. to 18 yrs. This is a wonderful opportunity for students and their families to sample classes from the upcoming Fall Semester, starting September 16 through December 23, 2015. Whether you are passionate about dance or just curious, we are opening our doors to everyone who wants to experience the joy of movement in a nurturing and inclusive environment. PJ Party: Arabian Nights at NY Kids Club (Brooklyn Heights)
Friday September 11th 6-8p. For ages 2.5-8y. $36 first child. $24 sibling. Explore the desert, mountains and Red Sea with the New York Kids Club caravan. On our Arabian journey, the children will ride camels through the dry and dark night, meet a genie from a magic lamp who will grant them three wishes, and go on a thrilling ride through the Arabian night to rescue the princess and her lost treasure! As a token of their passage, each child will take home their own magic genie puppet. We will celebrate our adventure by belly dancing beneath the Arabian moon. Dinner will be served. Bargemusic 9/11 Memorial Concert in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Friday September 11th 8p (doors open at 730p) Bargemusic will hold a free Memorial Concert led by its director, the violinist Mark Peskanov, featuring music by Bach, Haydn, Schubert and Chopin. No reserved seating. There are also free family friendly Bargemusic concerts on Saturdays at 4p until November.

China Institute Fall Family Festival (Financial District)
Saturday September 12th 1030a-3p. Free. Celebrate with China Institute as we open the doors to our new home in downtown Manhattan. At this festival celebrating Chinese culture, children and families can make arts & crafts, watch a kung fu performance, see a Chinese landscape painter at work, take part in a food-making demonstration, learn how to speak some Chinese, watch movies, taste yummy Chinese delicacies, and more. CityParks PuppetMobile: Tales of Brier Rabbit in Canarsie Park
Saturday September 12th 1230-115p. Free. The CityParks PuppetMobile’s original production, Tales of Brier Rabbit, follows the adventures of notorious trickster Brier Rabbit, who is once again up to no good. Deceiving and stealing from his fellow animal friends, Brier Rabbit thinks he’s much too clever to ever get caught. However, in this modern adaptation of the American folk tale, Brier Rabbit’s pals are on to his tricks, and set out to teach him a lesson he won’t soon forget!

Hip Tot Family Day: The Trummytones at Prospect Park’s Lakeside Rink
Sunday Setptember 13th 11a-2p. Free. We don’t want to toot our own horn, but on Sunday, September 13th Hip Tot Family Day is ending its season on a high note with a FREE concert by Ska legend and dad, Vinny Nobile and his band The Trummytones. Author Caron Levis will be reading her book Stuck with the Blooz and there will be special performances by The Magik Theater and Fort Greene’s Cumbe Center for African and Diaspora Dance! Plus look out for our friends from MetroPlus and Basis Independent Schools who have some super cool giveaways for everyone.
Brooklyn ARTery’s Governors Island Kite Festival
Sunday September 13th 11a-4p. Free. Location: Play Lawn. Join the Brooklyn ARTery in association with Governors Island Alliance on Sunday, September 13th from 11am-4pm for our Second Annual Governors Island Kite Festival! Set against a backdrop of unparalleled views of the Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor, the Kite Festival will celebrate the completion of another amazing season of programming and events on Governors Island. This year’s Festival will be bigger and better than ever before. Highlights include: giant show kites by Kites in Motion, kite-making and decorating workshops with Let’s Fly Kites, kite flying competitions and clinics, and performances by Brooklyn’s favorite parent/kid band, Dad Beats, and by the dynamic, stilt-walking brass collective — Shinbone Alley Stilt Band!
Wearable Pop Art at The Jewish Museum (UES)

Washington Square Park Folk Festival (Greenwich Village)
Sunday September 13th 1-5p. Free. Join us for the 5th Annual Washington Square Park Folk Festival. The festival will feature John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers, a legend of the 1960’s Greenwich Village folk scene, together with a number of excellent young groups from today’s New York City folk world. Pop-Up Audubon: Radical Raptors in Prospect Park
Saturday-Sunday until September 27th 10a-3p. Free. Location: Zucker Natural Exploration Area. Learn what makes birds of prey so radical and learn about different species of raptors that migrate through Prospect Park. Nature Play, 10–2 pm: Join Alliance naturalists and learn to appreciate the beauty of nature and develop self-reliance, creativity and problem-solving skills through different outdoor play-based activities. Program includes opportunities to dissect an owl pellet and paint with mud! Nature’s Helpers, 1 pm: Did you know that trees help trees? After learning how mulch protects tree roots, spend time spreading wood chips around trees. Family Bird Watching, 2 pm: Did you know that as an Important Bird Area, Prospect Park supports an exceptional diversity of migrating birds and is an essential stopover for about 250 species of birds? After learning how to use binoculars, participants of all ages can join Alliance Naturalists on a walk to learn how to identify these birds!
Jack and the Beanstalk at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Saturday & Sunday 1p until June 28th. See website for additional show times this summer. Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults. Based on the classic English fairytale, this fresh retelling of the Swedish Cottage original production takes Jack on an enchanting adventure up a magical beanstalk. In this starry new world, Jack encounters the notorious Giant, Milford, whose thieving ways have brought misfortune upon Jack and his mother. Determined to make life better for his family, Jack, with help from friends old and new, risks his life to take back what the Giant stole.
Beach Season Extended (various NYC beaches)
Open daily until Sunday September 13th with lifeguards are on duty daily, from 10a-6p. This year, for the first time, beach season has been extended an additional week! Most city beaches are open for swimming with limited service. Check the service changes at your beach below to plan your trip. Cedar Grove and Wolfe’s Pond beaches close on Labor Day. Parks maintains 14 miles of beaches and all other beaches are open through Sunday, September 13. During beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections. Closed sections are marked with signs and/or red flags.
89th Annual Feast Of San Gennaro (Little Italy)
Daily until September 20th. Free. The 89th Annual Feast of San Gennaro will be held in Little Italy for 11 days from Thursday, September 10, through Sunday, September 20, 2015, on the streets of historic Little Italy, the lower Manhattan neighborhood which served as the first home in America for hundreds of thousands of Italian immigrants who came here seeking to improve their lives beginning in the early part of the 20th century. CMA: Free Art Island Outpost on Governors Island
Saturday & Sunday 11a-3p until September 27th (and Labor Day September 7). For ages 1-15y. Free. Location: Outside Building 14 in Nolan Park. Bring the whole family and join CMA’s Teaching Artists, as we spend the summer making artwork inspired by Governors Island itself! Participants will create works that show the importance of nature and parks, and our place in between those two. We will be influenced by the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, and Richard Shilling as we scavenge for what nature has to offer, collaborating with site specific installations, and showcasing interactions with the sun, trees, water, and rocks. And be prepared to exploit the creative potential of everyday trash, repurposing it away from the landfills and oceans, by making it into clever and meaningful art.
