The good news is that there are also several fun family indoor events starting this weekend so there is still plenty to do if the weather is bad. Opening Day Celebration at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Lower East Side Pickle Day, Nature Prints for Sukkot at The Jewish Museum, Submerge: NYC Marine Science Festival at Hudson River Park Pier 26, the Bilingual Education Fair of New York 2015 at Hunter College, Havemeyer Sugar Sweets Festival 2015 at The City Reliquary, Film Forum Jr. Sunday Matinee: Hold That Ghost at the Film Forum and the Ragamuffin Parade.

Hansel and Gretel’s Halloween Adventure at The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre

Hansel and Gretel’s Halloween Adventure picks up where the original Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre production leaves off; with the pair’s pet swan Samantha flying the children back to their humble home after their wild escapade in the forest. Safely back at home during the Halloween season; Hansel and Gretel experience the most vivid dreams where Central Park and the Belvedere Castle serve as the backdrop for a magical explosion of music, dance and exciting encounters with a host of lovable characters. The brother and sister team once again embark on an adventure where beautiful mermaids, adorable monsters, swashbuckling pirates, charming vampires and a fabulous witch all intertwine for one unforgettable Halloween night in New York City.
Nature Prints for Sukkot at The Jewish Museum (UES)
Friday October 2nd 1-4p. Free with Museum admission. For ages 3 & up. Create festive prints using photo-sensitive paper, light, and objects from nature to produce an image in the spirit of Sukkot inspired by photography on view. Collage your print to make a playful wall decoration for a Sukkah or your room.
Abracadabra with Evan Paquette at the Brooklyn Heights Brooklyn Public Library

The Prince of Thieves and his merry men do all the wrong things for all the right reasons. In this fantastically funny, swashbuckling adventure from Seattle Children’s Theatre, ROBIN HOOD fights for justice with a tongue as sharp as his sword. Under the fly of arrows, and with some very clever quick changes, a versatile cast of four takes on every role from the sneaky Sheriff of Nottingham to the sassy Maid Marian to bring the legend of England’s most famous outlaw to life.

Bilingual Education Fair of New York 2015 at Hunter College (UES)
Saturday October 3rd 9a-5p. Tickets: $15/each online and $20 at the door (kids under 18th free). Purchase tickets here. Bonjour, Ola, 您好, Hello, Ciao, こんにちは, Hallo ! Bilingual education is booming! More and more parents understand the benefits of a bilingual education for their children. More and more options are now available all over the city, in both private and public education. The Bilingual Education Fair, organized by French Morning, a webmagazine, is the premier event for all interested in this movement that’s changing the face of so many schools in the city and the country. The event is geared toward parents who can meet all the actors of the bilingual education community in a single space; +100 exhibitors (schools, publishers, education businesses…) all practicing and promoting bilingual education in all languages (French, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, German, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew etc.) During the day, parents and all visitors will be able to participate in panel discussions and listen to featured speakers. Childcare will be available all day long as well as many educational activities to keep the children active and engaged.
Whitney Wees: Sights and Sounds at the Whitney Museum of American Art (Meatpacking District)
Saturday October 3rd 10-11a (also the 17th & 24th). For families with kids ages 4-5y. Tickets for this program are required: $5 per child, plus Museum admission ($22 adults, $18 seniors, free for children under 18). Families are encouraged to sign up for just one tour a month. Tickets cannot be refunded or exchanged. Bring your little ones to enjoy an interactive experience of looking, sharing, and working together in the galleries. This month we will explore Archibald Motley’s vibrant Jazz Age city scenes as well as artworks in the Whitney’s collection through sensory experiences. There is also Sketching Tour: Painting Portraits for children 6-10y old at 10-11a and Open Studio: Cooper-Moore 1030a-3p for all ages.
Just Kidding: Story Pirates at Symphony Space (UWS)
Saturday October 3rd 11a & 2p. Run time is $60 minutes. All tickets $15, members $13. Using stories submitted by children, the Story Pirates create outlandishly funny sketches and mini-musicals that leave kids and their parents howling in the aisles! Whether it’s following the adventures of a superhero baby, or reminiscing about disposable rain ponchos at a baseball game, the songs and stories explode with the creative energy that only a child could possess.
Submerge: NYC Marine Science Festival at Hudson River Park Pier 26 (Tribeca)
Saturday October 3rd 11a-4p. Free. Hudson River Park and the New York Hall of Science present SUBMERGE– a FREE, day-long science extravaganza devoted to raising awareness about our coastal waters. Celebrate local marine science through hands-on science activities, catch-and-release fishing, science stage events, kayaking and more! Interactive demonstrations will bring marine science and engineering topics to life, inspiring audiences of all ages.
Ragamuffin Parade (Bay Ridge)
Saturday October 3rd at 1p rain or shine. Free. For all ages. Join us for the 49th Annual Ragamuffin Parade. Thousands of youngsters from toddlers to pre-teens take part in the annual Children’s Ragamuffin Parade. Parade Route is: 76th – 92nd Street on 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge. Parade Assembly: 1230p 76th between 3rd and 4th Avenues/3rd and Ridge Blvd. Registration: 11a-1215p. Judging: 1130a-1230p. Where: Holy Angels Academy/O.L.A 74th Street (off 3rd Avenue). Free gifts will be presented to all children who submit their registration form and complete the parade.

Heart & Seoul: Celebrate Korea! at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Sunday October 4th 10a-5p. For all ages. Free with museum admission. Note: admission is $11 per person starting October 1st. Celebrate the opening of our newest exhibit Heart & Seoul: Growing up in Korea and join in a day filled with Korean arts and culture, featuring Vong Pak’s Korean Drum and Dance Troupe. Vong Pak’s Korean Drum and Dance Troupe will perform samulnori and seoljanggu, traditional percussion-based art forms at 1130a & 2p. The Troupe brings the highly sophisticated artistic beauty of the traditional Korean performing art as well as the spirit of Korean drumming to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
Arty Facts at the Brooklyn Museum (Crown Heights)
Sundays 11a-130p. $10 materials fee for up to four participants. For ages 4-7y. (Please don’t bring siblings older than seven or younger than four). In the thirtieth anniversary year of this art program for children ages four to seven, you and your family will explore the galleries through fun activities and engaging conversations, then head to the studio to create an artwork of your own. October theme: “Chic Technique!” Explore how artists experiment with tone, shades, texture, and color mixing in their work. Search through Connecting Cultures or other galleries and invent some techniques of your own as you create.

Havemeyer Sugar Sweets Festival 2015 at The City Reliquary (Williamsburg)
Sunday October 4th 11a–4p. Free admission. Brooklyn’s biggest bake sale is back! Join us for a family-friendly day of sweets, treats, music, entertainment, and more sweets at The City Reliquary, a non-profit museum and civic organization that has served Williamsburgh and the greater Brooklyn community for 10 years. A sweet-tooth smorgasbord featuring donated treats donated from everyone, from generous home chefs, to top-tier pros, to landmark New York bakeries. 100% of the proceeds from the bake sale will support The City Reliquary. Fun for kids begins at 11:00 am with music from The Big Littles, a toddler-friendly band. We’ll also have face painting for $5, and kids can build with the “Lego Lady” for a few dollars depending on what they choose to make. We’ll be selling Oslo coffee for the adults, juice for the kids, and donuts and breakfast pastries from Saraghina Bakery.
Lower East Side Pickle Day!
Sunday October 4th 12n-5p. Free. Location: Orchard Street between Delancey and E. Houston. Pickle Day is a neighborhood wide celebration of all things pickled that takes place every autumn in New York’s Lower East Side. The streets come alive with internationally renowned picklers, local vendors, live music, and activities. This celebration of the great LES pickling tradition takes center stage for ONE DAY EVERY YEAR, drawing enthusiasts from ’round the globe to remember their pickled roots! Games! Activities! Music! Dancing! This year’s Pickle Day will be overflowing with a jarring selection of activities. Boo at the Zoo: Mystery & Mischief at the Bronx Zoo

Our favorite Halloween tradition, Boo at the Zoo, is back at the Bronx Zoo, weekends in October. Get creative in the Whitney’s new Hearst Artspace! This week families are invited to work with musician Cooper-Moore to explore Archibald Motley’s paintings through sound. As a composer, performer, instrument builder/designer, and storyteller, Cooper-Moore has been a major, if somewhat behind-the-scenes, catalyst in the world of jazz and creative music for over thirty years.
Halloween Harvest at Luna Park (Coney Island)

Fall is definitely on the horizon, and that means Halloween Harvest at Luna Park in Coney Island! Join us every weekend from Sept 26 through Nov 1 for a family-friendly event filled with tons of activities, entertainment, and of course the Luna Park rides and games you know and love! Each weekend there will be FREE fun things to do such as Coney Carnival for airbrush tattoos, face painting and balloon animals, magicians strolling along the boardwalk, hair braiders, jugglers and Monster Mash Stage for dancing and contests, also Creepy Crawly Halloween themed Crafts and Camp Luna for stories and s’mores. Family Discovery Weekends at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Crown Heights)
Saturdays & Sundays until November 1st 1030a-230p. No programs October 10, 11, 24. Free with Garden admission. This is a drop-in program for families with children of all ages. Stop by the pavilion to create a nature-based craft, artwork, or invention. Experiment, learn, and play together in the Discovery Garden. Hands-on stations throughout the garden’s meadow, woodland, and marsh habitats, and in the vegetable garden encourage families to explore nature together. Amazing Maize Maze at Queens County Farm Museum
Saturdays & Sundays until October 25th & Columbus Day (10/12) 11a-430p (weather permitting, last ticket sold 430p). Amazing Maize Maze: $9 adults, $5 kids age 4 to 11, free for kids age 3 and under. Ready to be amaaazed? Kids and adults alike will have fun finding their way out of this 3-acre corn labyrinth! The adventure begins with a “Stalk Talk” to prepare you for the challenge of finding clues, solving puzzles and making your way out of the maze. Feel up to the challenge?
