Columbus Day & Weekday Events in Brooklyn & NYC: October 12th-15th

If you haven’t had a chance over the weekend you can still enjoy It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! Superheroes in Gotham Opening Weekend at Dimenna Children’s History Museum, Boo at the Zoo: Mystery & Mischiefat the Bronx Zoo, Flight School the Musical at Marjorie S. Deane Little Theatre, and the Amazing Maize Maze at Queens County Farm Museum this Monday.

Monday October 12th

Boo at the Zoo: Mystery & Mischief at the Bronx Zoo
Monday October 12th various times also weekends until November 1st.  Free with Total Experience Ticket. The General Admission ticket does not include all attractions.  Our favorite Halloween tradition, Boo at the Zoo, is back at the Bronx Zoo, weekends in October. Stop by for music, magic, and fun facts about our favorite animals that are surrounded by Mystery and Mischief. Enjoy a hay maze, costume parade, Mystery of Animals Station, 3-D Carved Pumpkins and more!  Take a look at the schedule of events and plan a trip with the whole family.

Amazing Maize Maze at Queens County Farm Museum
Monday October 12th  11a-430p (weather permitting, last ticket sold 430p) and weekends until October 25th.  Amazing Maize Maze: $9 adults, $5 kids age 4 to 11, free for kids age 3 and under.  Ready to be amaaazed? Kids and adults alike will have fun finding their way out of this 3-acre corn labyrinth! The adventure begins with a “Stalk Talk” to prepare you for the challenge of finding clues, solving puzzles and making your way out of the maze. Feel up to the challenge? Then join us for the fun of getting lost and loving it! *NOTE: Oct 25th there is an admission fee to enter the farm grounds for the Children’s Fall Festival.

The Annual Columbus Day Parade
Monday Octoboer 12th 1130a-3p.  Free. On Fifth Avenue, New York City.  Parade begins on Fifth Avenue at 44th Street and continues north along Fifth Avenue to 72nd Street. The grandstands will be located on Fifth Avenue between 67th and 69th Streets.
35,000 marchers. Over 100 groups, including bands, floats and contingents. Nearly one million spectators.  The Columbus Day Parade is a fun filled Parade that gets bigger and better every year. Participants from all over the world march in our Parade with pride. The Columbus Day Parade has become a globally televised event with millions of viewers and over a half million spectators on the streets. We invite you to join us and experience this memorable day.

Flight School the Musical at Marjorie S. Deane Little Theatre (UWS)
Monday October 12th at 1p also weekends until October 31st.  For ages 2-7y.  Tickets: $49.50-$59.50.  It’s the first day of Flight School, where they teach birds to fly. Penguin has the soul of an eagle and is ready to live on the wind. But he wasn’t built to soar, as the other birds constantly remind him. Penguin’s spirit won’t be grounded. With some friends of a feather, and a little help on the technical parts, Penguin follows his dreams to flip, flap, fly! With book by Cara Lustik, music by David Mallamud, and lyrics by Joshua H. Cohen, Flight School The Musical is based on the book Flight School from best-selling author Lita Judge.

Tuesday October 13th

Lavender Blues at Dynamic Dance Academy (Dyker Heights)
Tuesdays 11a.  $12/drop-in.  Lavender Blues is an intimate music & movement session for babies and toddlers. During our 40 minute classes kids develop an understanding of rhythm and music, build awareness and control of their body as well as develop social and coordination skills—all while singing, dancing and having fun!  We sit in a circle, sing songs, play instruments, have movement with our fingers, arms and feet, as well as march, dance, and play with a ginormous parachute!!   All of our classes are drop in, so that you may pay as you go! Mommy & Me Yoga at Abhaya Yoga Dumbo
Tuesdays 115-215p with Emily Lillywhite.  Bring baby, 6 weeks to 12 months. $18 online, $20 at the door.  Safely guide your body back from its life giving journey while bonding and having fun with your baby! Specialized asana with emphasis on toning the abdominal wall and pelvic muscles to restore alignment and strength for overall health. Breathing and restorative techniques address the emotional well being of the new mom. Options will be given to incorporate baby into poses. Have fun with movement and dance for an energy boost and lots of baby giggles. Feel support within a community of mothers, reclaim strength and tone.  Open to all mothers 6 weeks postpartum and beyond, who have been given the okay by their health care provider to practice yoga.  Please bring a baby blanket or muslin for baby to lie on, dress baby lightly or in layers that can be removed, bring filled water bottle for mom.  No previous yoga experience is needed.

Stroller Tour at the Guggenheim Museum (UES)
Tuesday October 13th 3-4p.  $20 per family (includes museum admission), free for Family and Kids Club Members.  Registration required.  Register here. Single strollers and front baby carriers only.   Stroll around the ramps with your baby in tow as museum educators lead an engaging one-hour tour for caregivers and their babies. Expect touchable objects and great adult conversations.

Wednesday October 14th

Breastfeeding Support Group at Gumbo (Boerum Hill)
Wednesdays 1230-230p.  $20.  Call to let us know you are coming.  718-855-7808.  Breastfeeding Support Group with Certified Lactation Counselor, Bethany Nevin.  Successful breastfeeding is often dependent on the support of others.  Join our breastfeeding circle where you’ll gain that support and learn from the knowledge and experience of fellow nursing mothers.  As moms who have breastfed their own children, Mollie and Bethany know firsthand that while breastfeeding is a normal and natural relationship between mother and child, it can sometimes come with unexpected challenges.  Together we’ll explore these challenges as well as the joys of breastfeeding.

Drop in Spanish Sing Along with Esperanza! at ELK (Windsor Terrace)
Wednesdays 1-145p.  $10/family.  Anza’s Music class! A lot of fun dancing and singing in Spanish with the guitar, flute, maracas, shakers, puppets, scarves, parachute and bubbles!

Afterschool Science Club: Building with littleBits at the Kings Highway Brooklyn Public Library
Wednesday October 14th 4-5p.  Free.  No children under 7!  LittleBits makes an open source library of electronic modules that snap together with tiny magnets for prototyping, learning and fun.  Children are require to have patience and be able to work on a team.

Thursday October 15th

Sing-Along with Janelle at Stocked (Prospect Heights)
Thursdays 1030-1115a.  $5.  Janelle is a Stocked regular and sing-along fanatic!  She holds a degree in theatrical arts and brings tons of fun with her.

Kids Create: Pumpkin Painting at the New Lots Brooklyn Public Library
Thursday October 15th 11a-12n.  Free.  For ages 3-5y.  Registration is required. Call or come into the library to register 718-649-0311.   Join us for pumpkin painting party. We will provide the pumpkins and paints. Please be sure to wear old clothes and remember to sign up.

NYC School Help: Intro to Public School: Prek and Kindergarten at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music
October 15th 730-930p.  Tickets: $25 per person or $40/family.  Purchase tickets here. For families who didn’t grow up here or just feel like they didn’t because they have very little idea about what the deal is with public schools these days! Get the low down on g&t, charter, dual language, magnet, unzoned, over capacity and how to manage the application. This talk is not location specific. I don’t talk about individual schools at this event.  It is often difficult for everyone to concentrate when young children attend the talk. Babies are welcome, but I ask that toddlers and young children don’t attend. Thank you for your understanding.

Play Time at Play Kids (Prospect Lefferts Gardens)
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1-3p.  $10/child.  For ages 0-3y.  Open Play sessions offer a fun and affordable way to get together with other children and parents/caregivers. Children share playtime with age-appropriate toys (balls, cars, blocks, puzzles) while building connections with each other. Save money by buying a Class Pass, one free class and bring a friend.

Kids’ Discovery Stations at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (Crown Heights)
Tuesday-Friday 1015a-1230p  until November 6th.  Free with Garden admission (Garden admission free on Tuesdays).  This docent-led, drop-in program is for families with children of all ages as well as camp groups. Get your hands dirty at kids’ Discovery stations throughout the Garden. Investigate a mystery plant, hold a water plant and learn how it floats, or go on a pollinator hunt in the meadow! All programs are outdoors and canceled in inclement weather; for updates, call 718-623-7200, ext. 7801.

Playgroup at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
Monday-Thursday 330-5p until May 29, 2016.  For ages 0-3y.  Drop-in – $15 first child/$7 additional child or 10 pack/10 visits $120 or $200 (family of 2 or more children pack).  Packs expire 3 months of date of purchase.  After a nap and lunch, but before bath and dinner, come to hang out and play with other 0-3 year olds at Bija​. With parents or caregivers present, little ones explore puzzles, instruments, books, and plush toys in a warm, safe, and enriching environment. One our our dynamic teachers leads an enrichment activity each afternoon 430-5p. Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more!  Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis.  Bija has a changing table and child size toilets perfect for potty training!  There is stroller parking but please fold up the strollers to accommodate all the families.  Playgroup requires that a parent or caregiver be present within the space.  Register one time only here.

Hansel and Gretel’s Halloween Adventure at The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre
Tuesday-Fridays 1030a & 12n; additional show on Wednesdays at 230p and weekends at 1p until October 31st.  See website for more information.  Ticket prices are: $7/children under 12, $10/all others.  Hansel and Gretel’s Halloween Adventure picks up where the original Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre production leaves off; with the pair’s pet swan Samantha flying the children back to their humble home after their wild escapade in the forest.  Safely back at home during the Halloween season; Hansel and Gretel experience the most vivid dreams where Central Park and the Belvedere Castle serve as the backdrop for a magical explosion of music, dance and exciting encounters with a host of lovable characters. The brother and sister team once again embark on an adventure where beautiful mermaids, adorable monsters, swashbuckling pirates, charming vampires and a fabulous witch all intertwine for one unforgettable Halloween night in New York City.

Sensory Room Family Hours at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Tuesdays & Thursdays & Saturday-Sunday 2-445p.  For all ages. Free with museum admission.  The Sensory Room is an inclusive space where children of all abilities can engage with their peers and explore their senses. This room provides a welcoming environment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Play Space at LuLu’s then & now (Park Slope/Gowanus)
Daily (excluding holidays) from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm.  Please allow us time between 1pm and 2pm for maintenance.  Rates: $12 per session (10am-1pm or 2pm to 5pm) for the first child and $6 for siblings. Or, purchase a 10-pack for $105.  Admission to events at the Play Space is on first come first serve basis.  Our Play Space is a beautiful room filled with innovative, stimulating, modern toys and a well curated library for your tot to explore, imagine and create with.  Please review the rules here before coming to the Play Space.

Playtimes at Norman & Jules (Park Slope)
Mondays 930-530p & Tuesday-Fridays 930a-3p September & October.  $12/first child, additional child $6.  Package 10 for $108.  Our backyard is intended for ages 6m to 5y.  We do not offer drop-offs.  Caregivers must be with their children at all times.
