Hi everyone,

January usually means things are slowing down but there are still lots of weekend events to check out with the kids.

This weekend take the kids to Just Kidding: The Pop Ups at Symphony Space, Three Kings Day in Williamsburg, Frozen Yoga Adventure! at Karma Kids Yoga, MulchFest 2016, Recess for Parents: Ice Age Movie Night at Recess, Goldilocks & the 3 Bears at Puppetworks, Film Forum Jr. Sunday Matinee Yellow Submarine at the Film Forum, The Saturday Morning Show at Hudson Eats, Movies @ the Library: A Bug’s Life at Greenpoint Brooklyn Public Library, Art, Movement, Music, Pretend! at the Brooklyn Historical Society, Map NYC: ABC 123 at New York Transit Museum and Superheroes Weekend at DiMenna Children’s History Museum.

Also this weekend is the last chance to check out the GingerBread Lane at New York Hall of Science and Big Apple Circus at Lincoln Center!

Friday January 8th

Lavender Blues at SuperFrench Studio (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Fridays 11a.  $13/drop-in.  Lavender Blues is an intimate music & movement session for babies and toddlers. During our 40 minute classes kids develop an understanding of rhythm and music, build awareness and control of their body as well as develop social and coordination skills—all while singing, dancing and having fun!  We sit in a circle, sing songs, play instruments, have movement with our fingers, arms and feet, as well as march, dance, and play with a ginormous parachute!!   All of our classes are drop in, so that you may pay as you go! Recess for Parents: Ice Age Movie Night at Recess (DUMBO)
Friday January 8th 530-830p.  $40 per child, $30 per sibling.  Evening events are available for kids ages 2.5 to 6 years old. (Children should have some prior separation experience!) Advance registration is encouraged.Parents need Recess too! Leave your kids with us and go out for dinner or drinks or simply enjoy some well-deserved “me time.” Our staff will supervise as your kids get fed, wired, then tired while they socialize with friends, play and enjoy a themed activity or movie!  Flexible drop-off is between 5:30 and 6pm with pick-up at 8:30pm. Introduction to Coding: Drop-in Workshops at DiMenna Children’s History Museum (UWS)
Fridays in January & February except January 22nd 6-8p.  Free on Pay-as-you-wish Fridays.  For ages 8y-Adult.  Building on the games and technologies on display in our groundbreaking exhibition Silicon City, parents and children learn how to code in interactive workshops during our Pay-as-you-wish Friday evenings. In this drop-in lab, visitors will learn how to animate a simple cartoon using a coding program for beginners called “Scratch.” Educators will also be on hand in the exhibition gallery to explain how technology has evolved in New York City.

Saturday January 9th

MulchFest 2016 (various locations)
Saturday & Sunday Jan 9th-10th 10a-2p.  Free.  Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city!  Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation , and GreeNYC  to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree . More than 30,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!  See the website for chipping and drop off locations.

Just Kidding: The Pop Ups at Symphony Space (UWS)
Saturday January 9th 11a & 2p.  All $15, members $13.  Expected Run Time is 60 minutes. The Pop Ups are a two-time GRAMMY nominated children’s musical duo based in Brooklyn. Their performances use cardboard props, hand-painted sets, and a cast of original puppets. Recognized as one of the country’s top 15 kids’ bands by Time Out New York Kids, they made their television debut on Sprout’s Sunny Side Up Show in 2014, and recently released their fourth album, Great Pretenders Club, to critical acclaim.

Story Time: Tough Guys Have Feelings Too at Greenlight Bookstore (Fort Greene)
Saturdays at 11a.  Free.  Saturday Story Time is geared toward kids ages 3 to 8 and their families. Author/Illustrator Story Time: Keith Negley presents Tough Guys (Have Feelings Too).  Ninjas, wrestlers, and superheroes might seem like nothing can faze them, but just like all of us, they get upset, embarrassed and nervous; they all have feelings too! With Keith Negley’s bright, bold illustrations and fun read-aloud narrative, Tough Guys (Have Feelings Too) opens up a light-hearted but important discussion on emotions and how they affect us all. Using familiar characters and familiar feelings that children wouldn’t expect to see alongside each other, Negley has created a touching story book ideal for encouraging parents and children to talk about their emotions, instilling emotional intelligence from a young age. At today’s Story Time, Keith reads his book, then leads an interactive ninja feelings drawing demonstration: kids match up feelings with activities, and Keith draws the matchups (a sad ninja driving a car, etc). Join us for a great story time with tough guys and their feelings!

The Saturday Morning Show at Hudson Eats  (Battery Park)
Saturdays 11a-1p until February 6th.  Free.  For ages 8 and under.  Location: Hudson Eats at Brookfield Place Located in the back seating area.  The Popular Saturday Morning show is BACK! Playtime for kids and parents overlooking the waterfront in Hudson Eats.  Join us each week for the latest and greatest in childrens entertaiment.  Saturday January 9th: 11a – Abbasubi & 12p Gary the Great.  See website for all the details.

Art, Movement, Music, Pretend! at the Brooklyn Historical Society (Brooklyn Heights)
Saturdays 11a-12n until April 16th.  For children 3-7. Program admission is $5 per participating child; accompanying adults and siblings are free!  BHS Family Programs has returned!  Make sure to arrive early, as admission will be first come, first served.  Each Saturday, Brooklyn Historical Society’s programming focuses on educating and entertaining our borough’s youngest historians. Teaching artists lead young visitors in activities inspired by the exhibitions on view.  Children create “Make and take” art projects, move with partners from Together in Dance, or put history to music in sing-a-longs with Lloyd H. Miller.

Sunday January 10th

GingerBread Lane House Giveaway at the New York Hall of Science
Sunday January 10th Line opens at 10 am; Giveaway begins at 11 am.  Free with Museum Admission.  Take a piece of GingerBread Lane home with you! Houses will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis until every piece of GingerBread Lane is gone. Be sure to bring a box or bag with you so you can carry your gingerbread houses home. (Flat-bottomed shopping bags or paper grocery bags work best.)

Frozen Yoga Adventure! at Karma Kids Yoga (Flatiron)
Sunday January 10th 10-11a.  Fee is $40 per child.  Do you want to build a snowman? Join Ana, Elsa, Olaf, and your favorite Frozen friends on a magical yoga adventure to Arendale! We’ll meet all kinds of animals as we journey through the wintry woods and monstrous mountains in search of Elsa’s magical castle, where we’ll have a sing along dance party to your favorite Frozen songs!   Costumes are highly encouraged for this Frozen adventure!

Surprise Show with Lloyd H. Miller at the Jalopy Theatre (Carroll Gardens/Red Hook)
Sunday January 10th show starts at 11a.  Tickets: $5 kids, $10 adults, $25 family of four.  Per Lloyd H. Miller’s facebook page he will be doing the sing-a-long at Jalopy this Sunday instead of the Emily Eagen sing-a-long!  Lloyd H. Miller is the leader of all those sing-a-longs, the founder of the Deedle Deedle Dees, a Brooklyn NY-based educational band, and the co-writer (along with saxophonist / composer Roy Nathanson) of Trashed Out, a multi-media musical.

Film Forum Jr. Sunday Matinee Yellow Submarine at the Film Forum (South Village)
Sundays 11a All tickets: $7.50. Advance tickets on sale at the box office and online.  Through the generosity of our founding sponsor, The Cordelia Corporation, we are able to make this series a bargain for children, their parents, and anybody else who would like to see these marvelous films.  Sunday January 10th: Yellow Submarine (1968, George Dunning) When Pepperland, an animated musical undersea fantasy world, is attacked by the music-hating Blue Meanies, it’s up to John, Paul, George and Ringo to jump on that yellow submarine, disguise themselves as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and save the day. Filled with Beatles classics like “All You Need is Love,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” and the title tune. DCP. Approx. 85 mins. Three Kings Day in Brooklyn (Williamsburg)
Sunday January 10th line up starts at 1p and the parade will start at 2p.  Free.  The annual Three Kings Day Parade, complete with the kings, their camels and thousands of spectators, is coming to Williamsburg. Also known as the feast of the Epiphany, Three Kings Day commemorates the visit of the three wise kings to the Christ child.  The parade starts on Graham Avenue.  Complete with kings, donkeys, floats, music and hundreds of costumed marchers.  Come out and Join the Boy’s and Girls , Teachers , School Staff, and Friends Of Community School District 14 & 32 for our Annual Brooklyn Three Kings Day Parade.. Help us continue our Community Traditions.

Superheroes Weekend at DiMenna Children’s History Museum (UWS)
Saturday-Sunday January 9th-10th 12n-4p.  Free admission for kids 18 and under all weekend long!  It’s time to get into superhero shape! Come to the Museum this weekend and enjoy a session of Superhero Bootcamp. Led by iconic superheroes who will be roaming the galleries all afternoon, in Superhero Bootcamp kids will learn crucial physical skills needed to become a superhero! Junior superheroes will also have the chance to fold and fly their very own superhero planes and design and create superhero wrist cuffs to wear and take home.  Make sure to pick up our Superheroes in Gotham family guide and find all six heroes in this amazing exhibition. And don’t forget to get your picture taken with the one and only Batmobile!

Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden (Bronx)

Gingerbread Lane at New York Hall of Science (Flushing Meadows)
Ongoing until Saturday January 9, 2016.  Tuesday–Friday 930a–5p & Saturday & Sunday 10a–6p.  Free with Museum admission.   Marvel at homemade gingerbread houses made entirely of edible gingerbread, royal icing and candy. The houses are drafted, designed, baked, planned, built and decorated by chef Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. GingerBread Lane has won the Guinness World Record for the largest gingerbread village for 2013 and 2014 and will compete for its third consecutive Guinness World Record this year. Lovitch’s creation will again contend for this year’s Guinness World Record.  The all-new 2015 version of GingerBread Lane will cover 500 square feet and will have more than 1,050 houses and structures including a double-decker carousel reminiscent of one on the Coney Island boardwalk in days past and the S.C. Kringle & Co. Department Store which hearkens back to Gimbels department store in the early 1900s. GingerBread Lane 2015 will also have new twists like The Pumpkin Spice Latte Coffee Shoppe, The EveryDay’s Thanksgiving Café, a second train (for the first time), and a 10-square-foot candy factory you can see inside of as you climb the stairs to view GingerBread Lane.  While the exhibition’s layout and composition change yearly, GingerBread Lane always includes Eggnog Bay, Gum Drop Row, Peppermint Central Park, Candy Cane Place and Toffee Boulevard. As a grand finale, Lovitch will give away all houses on January 10.

14th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Ongoing until February 21st.  M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p.  Free.  Location:  NY Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store Shuttle Passage. Presented annually by the New York Transit Museum, this popular model railroad exhibition features Metro-North, New York Central, and subway trains departing from a miniature Grand Central Terminal on a 34’-long, two-level “O” gauge layout. The Museum’s store and booth at the Holiday Fair also offer great gifts for your holiday shopping. Transit gifts are available online at www.nytransitmuseumstore.com.

Big Apple Circus at Lincoln Center
Ongoing until January 10th at various times.  Tickets start at $25.  For more information please see the website.  Big Apple Circus returns to the Big Top at Lincoln Center for the company’s 38th season with the World Premiere of its all-new show, The Grand Tour!  The Grand Tour transports audiences to the Roaring 1920s, the advent of the modern travel era, when the most adventuresome began to tour the world in ships, planes, trains, and automobiles. With every seat less than 50 feet from the stage, audiences will be awed by the world-class entertainers as they perform breathtaking acts from the four corners of the globe. Clowns, jugglers, acrobats, and aerialists from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America appear with ponies, puppies and more; the troupe sets off on their own whirlwind adventure, accompanied by the live, seven-piece Big Apple Circus Band at each of more than 100 performances.
