Weekday Events in Brooklyn & NYC: February 1st-4th

February is going to be here a few hours and it is such a fun month with lots of events coming up for the Chinese New Year, Black History month and mid-winter school break.

This week take the kids and enjoy Harry Potter Book Night: A Night of Spells at the Central Brooklyn Public Library, Ed Center in Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1, Hopalong Andrew Drop-in Sing Along at SuperFrench Studio, Lavender Blues at Ode to Babel, Hoots & Hollers at Explorers Academy Preschool, Celebrate Groundhog Day at the Staten Island Zoo, FunikiJam TumbleJam! at The Stomping Ground, Kids Create: Black History Month at the Park Slope Brooklyn Public Library, Aleph Bet Ship at the Jewish Children’s Museum, The Gumball Gang: Crime-Solving Kids at TADA Youth Theater and the opening of Little Red’s Hood at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Monday February 1st

Hoots & Hollers at Explorers Academy Preschool (Downtown Brooklyn)
Monday & Friday 10-11a until June 24th.  For kids 2-5y.  Single session: $12.  Season passes available for purchase.  This spring, in the mornings at 10am, we will have singalong sessions with one of Brooklyn’s finest singer/songwriters, Emma Barish.  A New York native and current Crown Heights resident, Emma loves Joni Mitchell and sings in a doo wop rock band.  A talented musician who has worked extensively with young children, Emma has a special knack for connecting with kids so they are able to relax and engage with music.  Kids are welcome to  sing along or listen or simply do their own thing.  This is less of a structured music class and more or a chance for kids to really enjoy music. NOTE: Hoots & Hollers is appropriate for babies and toddlers up to age 5 and requires the attendance of a parent or caregiver.   Food is not allowed on the premises so please, kindly enjoy your delicious snacks before or after these sessions.

Hopalong Andrew Drop-in Sing Along at SuperFrench Studio (Bedford Stuyvesant)
Mondays 11-1145a for babies and toddlers.  $15.  One-man band, playing folk favorites, campfire singalongs, and dosey-doe hoedowns – for all ages & occasions. Think Roy Rogers meets Pete Seeger and Jesse Fuller – a 1-man band, with guitar, banjo, harmonica, and vintage Samsonite suitcase drum. He’ll get you to sing along, dance along, play along, and have an all-Americana good time.  Hopalong Andrew’s sing-alongs have restarted again for the winter.  See his Facebook page for all the sing-alongs in Brooklyn.

FunikiJam TumbleJam! at The Stomping Ground (Crown Heights)
Mondays 415-515p.  Drop in $30 & for The Stomping Ground members $12.  Started with a Nashville playgroup  in 1999, FunikiJam has evolved into a landmark early childhood education and entertainment organization with an annual reach of over 70,000 patrons. From NYC headquarters, FunikiJam delivers its trademark “music exploration for the next generation” across the globe through  live shows, musical recordings, film production, classes and teacher training.  THEMES: America’s Birthday Jam: patriotic, symphonic, &  Americana, Beach Party: fun, fun, fun w/ocean animals, surf rock, & good vibrations, Island Adventure: come back to the islands w/ reggae, caribe, & rain forest, Fiesta Carnivale: from Brooklyn to Brazil: South American celebration

Tuesday February 2nd

Celebrate Groundhog Day at the Staten Island Zoo
Tuesday February 2nd.  The ceremony starts at 7a and Chuck will predict 730a.  Admission to the ceremony is FREE!  With a prediction success rate of 80% – tops among Groundhogs Chuck will once again astound with both his accuracy and affection.  The Patrick Raftery Rock-a-Silly band will perform at the ceremony!

Little Red’s Hood at Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Starting Tuesday February 2nd and will happen M-F 1030a & 12n and Saturdays & Sundays 1p.  There will be an additional Wednesday show at 230p starting March 2nd and there will be extra shows Presidents Week & Spring Break.  See website for more information.  Tickets are $7/children and $10/adults.  Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.  Children 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Tuesdays at 1230p.  $12/drop-in.  Babies only (0-12m)!
Special 30 min infants only music class. A bit calmer and more intimate of a group! A lovely bonding experience for baby and you!  All of our classes are drop in, so that you may pay as you go!  Classes are also available in 10 pack bundles!  See the website for additional drop in locations in Brooklyn.

Wednesday February 3rd

The Paper Bag Players: Pop-Pop-Popcorn! at LIU Brooklyn’s Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts (Downtown Brooklyn)
Wednesday-Thursday February 3rd-4th 10a & 12n.  Contact The Paper Bag Players at pbagp@verizon.net or 212-353-2332 for ticket information.  Pop-Pop-Popcorn! is the latest fun-filled hour from The Paper Bag Players. The show is bursting with new work and sprinkled with classic Paper Bag Player sketches sure to entertain and delight kids ages 3-8.

The Gumball Gang: Crime-Solving Kids at TADA Youth Theater (Chelsea)
Wednesday February 3rd 10a & 12n and also Saturdays & Sundays 2p & 4p until February 14th.   Recommended for ages 3+.  Tickets: $25 Adults/$15 Kids.  Running time: 1:10. Join The Gumball Gang as they try to solve The Case of the Missing Masterpiece.  TADA! Youth Theatre’s World Premiere Musical, The Gumball Gang: Crime-Solving Kids, follows the exciting adventures of a group of kids as they set out to find stolen paintings in the case of the missing masterpieces.

Kids Create: Black History Month at the Brooklyn Public Library (Park Slope)
Wednesday February 3rd 415-5p.  Free.  For children ages 6 and up. Younger children are welcome with an adult.  Join us as we honor Black History Month with a series of Kids Create programs that celebrate the lives and creative expressions of some amazing African-American artists.  Romare Bearden was an artist whose vibrant collages and paintings depicted African-American life in Harlem. We will find inspiration in his artwork from books in the Library’s collection, and create our own collages based on his technique.  Note: This program will be ticketed. 25 tickets will be given out at the information desk thirty minutes before the start of the program.

Thursday February 4th

Ed Center in Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1
Thursdays 3-5p and also Saturdays and Sundays from 1–5p.  Free.  The Ed Center is open for free, drop-in hours three afternoons a week! Get to know Brooklyn Bridge Park with our 250 gallon aquarium filled with critters from the East River, a 10’ scale model of Brooklyn Bridge Park, crafts, a reading corner, and much more!

Abhaya Kids at Abhaya Yoga (DUMBO)
Thursdays 4-450p.  Drop in $18 online/$20 at door.  This class for children 3-5y will focus on improving strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. The classes will encourage a deeper sense of body awareness and children will learn how to center themselves with breathing and visualization techniques.

Harry Potter Book Night: A Night of Spells at the Central Brooklyn Public Library
Thursday February 4th 4-6p.  Free.  Location: Youth Wing.  Join us for A Night of Spells, Bloomsbury’s 2016 Harry Potter Book Night.  Wizards will take over the Youth Wing to bring us Harry Potter inspired fun.  Come hear sections of the books read aloud, bring your own device to take a picture with the visiting wizards, and make sure to wear your robes and house colors!

Aleph Bet Ship at the Jewish Children’s Museum (Crown Heighs)
Monday-Thursdays 1-3p & Sunday 12n-4p until February 22nd except Sunday January 31st.  Free with Museum admission.  For children 2 and older.  Youngsters will go on an ‘underwater’ journey to discover the Hebrew “Aleph Bet” letters, while playing the role of captain, with hats, ship barrels, and a captain’s wheel.  Throughout the trip, the young captains will get to explore and experiment with aleph bet letters by shaping letters with kinetic sand, playing a magnetic matching game with fish along the ocean wall, relaxing with a variety of aleph bet books in the reading nook, exploring the letters in a discovery alcove, and sending the letters up in a wind tunnel.

Toddler Open Play at Prospect Gymnastics (Flatbush/Ditmas Park)
Mondays & Wednesdays 10a-12n, Tuesday 130-330p, Thursdays 10a-12n & Fridays 230-430p.  Note: week of 2/15-2/19 open plays is 3-5p due to President’s Week.  $10/single drop in, $60 10 class pass or $80 monthly unlimited with 2 guest passes.  Open playtime for toddlers 4 and under. Parental supervision required.

14th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal (Midtown East)
Ongoing until February 21st.  M–F: 8a–8p, Saturday and Sunday: 10a–6p.  Free.  Location:  NY Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store Shuttle Passage. Presented annually by the New York Transit Museum, this popular model railroad exhibition features Metro-North, New York Central, and subway trains departing from a miniature Grand Central Terminal on a 34’-long, two-level “O” gauge layout. The Museum’s store and booth at the Holiday Fair also offer great gifts for your holiday shopping. Transit gifts are available online at www.nytransitmuseumstore.com.

Playgroup at Bija Kids (Clinton Hill)
Monday-Thursday 330-5p until May 26th.  For ages 0-3y.  $15 first child/$7 additional child or 10 packs also available.  After a nap and lunch, but before bath and dinner, come to hang out and play with other 0-3 year olds at Bija. With parents or caregivers present, little ones explore puzzles, instruments, books, and plush toys in a warm, safe, and enriching environment. One our our dynamic teachers leads an enrichment activity each afternoon. Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more!  Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis.Expect bubbles, parachute, paint, and more!  Parents and caregivers must remain onsite.

Open Play at Edamama Cute Cuts & More (Williamsburg)
Open Play between 1 and 3:45 pm Everyday (except Mondays)!  Drop-in – $6 first child/$4 additional child.  10 Visits – $50 (single child pack) or $90 (family of 2 or more children pack) valid for 2 months from the day of purchase.  Join us as it is freezing outside. Luckily after a nap & lunch but before bath and dinner, you can now come to hang out and play with other 0-3 years olds at Edamama. Bring your friends and explore various award winning books, enjoy your free drink, play with toys in a warm safe, clean and enriching environment. Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis!

WEE Arts Drop-in Session at the Children’s Museum of the Arts (South Village)
Monday-Friday: 1045a-12p & Wednesdays 145-3p, $25 per family ($20 for members).  Want to stay longer? General admission is just $6 per person after drop-in.  Music time! Story time! Art time! Join CMA’s WEE teaching artists for an art-filled drop-in session before we open our doors to the public. Parent and/or caregivers are required to join and we encourage family collaboration throughout the class. No sign up required.

Play Space at LuLu’s then & now (Park Slope/Gowanus)
Mondays 10a-5p (story time at 11a included), Tuesdays 10a-5p, Wednesdays 1230-5p, Thursdays 10a-5p, Fridays 1245-5p & Saturdays-Sundays 10a-5p.  Rates: $12 per visit for the first child and $6 for siblings.  Or, Consider purchasing a 10-pack for $105.  Admission to events at the Play Space is on first come first serve basis.  Our Play Space is a beautiful room filled with innovative, stimulating, modern toys and a well curated library for your tot to explore, imagine and create with.  Please review the rules here before coming to the Play Space.
