5 Steps to A Super Successful Move

Moving is never without some stress, and it’s rarely a party. Here are five steps from Urban Clarity‘s Amanda Wiss for having a successful move.
1. Purge ruthlessly.
There’s no reason to pack, move and unpack stuff that you don’t need or want on the other end. Don’t just purge the clothes, kitchen stuff and toys that no one cares about, but also take the time to shred the paper, recycle the electronics, and finally admit that you’re not going to repair that broken chair. Ah, lighter already.
2. Get some vendor quotes!
Call some moving companies (we’ll refer you to our favorites if you call or email us) and start to understand how much this process will cost. Are you planning to paint? Install closets?  Start to line up a budget and the resources you need to make your move go well.
3. Create a flexible timeline.
This is essential, so you make sure to hit your dates. There are lots of tasks, especially if you need to vacate one place before you can land in another, or are moving to a new city. Have a calendar that includes purging, packing, cleaning (both places), loading, storage/transit, unloading, unpacking and the myriad other tasks.  Build in some buffer, if you’re able.
4. Expect there to be some unknowns …
Even if you have an amazing schedule and a perfect floor plan, it’s possible that things go awry. We’ve been on moves where bunk beds were glued together upon installation so couldn’t be taken apart for the move, where the elevator had been rebuilt in the 35 years since the couch was purchased and it can’t fit out the 17 floors of the building. There will be some unknowns, so stay flexible, creative and upbeat during this stressful process.
5. Focus on the end game!
Even if you’re not incredibly thrilled with the transition, moving is all about creating a home for you and your family.  Focus on how amazing it will feel to create a space that you love. The big picture is that it’ll all be over soon, so keep plugging away at your tasks and know that the end is in sight!
