Night at the Museum!
If you haven’t made it to the Whitney Museum since it moved downtown last May, this is the best time of year to visit for a few reasons. They have evening hours on Friday and Saturdays and – wait for it, Friday nights from 7pm-10pm are Pay What You Wish! So if you wish for a cheaper date night, this is the plan for you!
Summer is also a fantastic time to visit the Whitney because there are outdoor spaces on every floor. You can have a glass of wine and look over the Hudson or just go outside for a peek and travel floor to floor and terrace to terrace. It’s smack in the middle of the Meatpacking District, which you probably wouldn’t usually consider for a date night (because you have children), but nothing makes you feel better about your coupled life than watching 20-somethings out on the town desperately looking for love. Ah, stability.
Here is more info about their current exhibits and planning your visit. Generally the museum is closed on Tuesdays, but in July and August they will be open 7 days a week.
Transportation – make it a combo!
Here is a tip for date nights in Manhattan where subways can be a drag, parking can be impossible, and cabs can cost a pretty penny: make it a combo! If taking the subway would require a lot of walking, switching trains, or dealing with a line that always gets rerouted or canceled on weekends, try driving or taking a shorter cab ride to either Atlantic Center or an L train stop (Lorimer has easy street parking after 7pm) for one quick train into the city. Obviously this will depend on where you live and where you’re going, but it’s a good way to think creatively about getting to and from the city so you don’t put a damper on your night paying $50 for a taxi or parking, sitting in bridge traffic, or getting stuck on a subway platform. Arriving soundly to a tidy home with sleeping children (who you didn’t put to bed) is an important part of date night!
