We spoke with Lisa Sikorski, the Brooklyn Summer Camp Director at Textile Arts Center to find out what kinds of crafty things her and her campers will be up to this summer!
Hi Lisa, tell us about your camp!
TAC Summer Camp is a fun and well rounded experience for kids ages 5-12 including outdoor time, museum trips, games, and of course textile arts and crafts! Depending on the session, campers can explore techniques like printing, felting, weaving, and surface design. It’s an incredible summer filled with lots of creativity, exploration, and most importantly, fun!
We run two programs – one out of our Brooklyn Studio in Gowanus, and the other out of our Greenwich Village Studio in Manhattan.
What is your role at TAC?
I’ve been the Youth Programs Manager for our Brooklyn location since 2015. During the school year, I manage our Brooklyn After School program, and teach 4 classes per week. In the summers, I’m the Director for our Brooklyn Camp Program. Year round I love teaching the kids and then seeing them put their new skills into action. They amaze me every day!
What makes TAC Summer Camp unique?
First off, we’re the only camp around where kids can explore these kinds of techniques in a creative studio environment with a fully equipped and state-of-the-art workspace. We also take advantage of the many amazing exhibits in New York City, exposing kids to a world of art and design throughout the summer. Campers use these trips as a source of inspiration for their weekly project. I’m always amazed at what they create, and it’s so much fun to share their work with friends and family at the end of each session.
How can we see examples of camper work?
Visit our website www.textileartscenter.com for more info, and photo albums from previous camp years. If you’re on Instagram, be sure to follow @textileartscenter and explore the #KidsofTAC hashtag for a behind the scenes look at camp life.
Do campers need to have textile experience to attend camp?
No! Our program is designed for kids at all skill levels. We help first timers feel like pros and experienced textile campers push the envelope by building on what they already know.
Do the kids get out and play? Field trips?
Yes, definitely! Brooklyn campers play daily in a nearby playground. This year we’ll be making museum field trips to the The Museum of Art and Design, The Met, MOMA PS1, The Jewish Museum, The Museum at FIT, and Cooper Hewitt.
Can you tell us more about your camp counselors?
They’re amazing! We’ve hired a group of the most creative, fun, and committed camp counselors and technique instructors. Many come from textile backgrounds or art educational backgrounds, and some are familiar faces at TAC year round. In general we have 1 adult to every 5 campers, so campers always have access to individual attention and support throughout the session.
What do you want kids to get out of your program?
Knowledge through empowerment is at the heart of our Youth Education Programs. We want kids to appreciate the unique values of textile arts, and learn skills they can take with them wherever they go. Most importantly, we want kids to have a fun summer making new friends and being creative!
This sounds amazing. Is camp already full for the summer?
We’re definitely filling up quickly but there are some spots left! You can sign up directly through our site, and call us at our Brooklyn location with any questions at 718-369-0222 , or email info@textileartscenter.com with any questions. We’d be happy to help, and happy to see new faces at camp this summer! If you’re summer is already booked up, we also offer an After School program during the school year that’s equally exciting – learn more here!
