Last Slated Summer for a Favorite Neighborhood Pool, Unless….

We all love a great destination. For more than a couple of years now, many parents and residents of Brooklyn have adored the Pop-Up Pool at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The pool needs your signatures to stick around, which would only be a good thing. Go ahead, sign!
Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pop-up Pool has been open for almost a month now, and it’s as popular as ever.  Despite the success, this is slated to be the last year before the space is converted into more parkland. Exactly what it will be has not yet been fully determined, but it has been confirmed that it will not be a pool.  The community has pushed back and begun to form the coalition “Love Our Pool” (Families United for a Pool in Brooklyn Bridge Park) with over 400 total signatures from fans across the city and their online petition with an immediate goal of 500.

Offering free entry and affordable swim lessons, advocates say there is nothing like it.  Complete with a view out onto the East River and Manhattan Skyline, the 30 by 50 foot pool has a 2,500-square-foot sand beach, Lizzmonade restaurant, showers and restrooms making it an oasis in Brooklyn summers.

While the plan originally had been to run it for just these past five summers,  the actual pool was built to last many more years, if needed. Various Brooklyn politicians have also voiced their dismay at the pool’s potential closing with Senator Daniel Squadron and his office clearly stating the importance of maintaining a pool in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Given the location in the middle of the park, its unique feature is able to draw visitors not only from local areas but also far parts of Brooklyn and even Manhattan.  Another water feature has been proposed (and would be a welcome addition for many) but would not provide the benefit of water safety and helping children feel comfortable in the water.  Swim lessons are provided in three age brackets from ages two to eight, at $125 for 8 lessons. A few spots are still open for those interested!
