Another Take on Indoor Playspaces

Those of us with little ones and small apartments know we need places to take them to run, jump on things, climb if possible, and maybe even socialize with other kids (however much this actually happens under 3). For those of us with older kids, there are more options and different places, but you still need something to do outside the house on those cold days when there is no school.

Here are some ideas for the little ones.

My favorite is the indoor playspace at the YMCA. The 9th St. Propect Park Y has an indoor playground three days and week and the Dodge YMCA has a similar Toddler Time in their gym. Sometimes we go to the indoor playspace at BAX on 5th ave where the teacher, Ben, is a miracle. He talks to all the kids in just the right way that makes them comfortable and feeling like someone is really listening to them about which scarves are the best color. Fantastic.

The Little People Party

We can’t wait to go to the The Little People Party in Williamsburg, but we haven’t made it yet because it requires a subway trip. If you are close by, go and tell me how it is! It looks great as they have a huge astro turf play area inside.

Another one that has been getting a lot of press is Fairytale Island in Bay Ridge.

Recess in Dumbo

For a real indoor playground, try Recess in Dumbo. They are open Monday-Thursday 9a-6p, Friday 9a-5p and Saturday-Sundays 9a–1130a. Kids (with parents of course) may come in and play anytime during our scheduled play hours.

Prospect Gymnastics has been hosting indoor playtimes lately and listing them on our calendar. This is for toddlers 4 and under, but I really think they should offer something for older kids as I would have loved this as an 8 year old.

For last minute fun in Park Slope, the tots drop-in center at Congregation Beth Elohim is a place for children ages 0-24 months and their parents/caregivers to explore, learn, and have fun! Drop in for play with age-appropriate toys and activities in their social hall (large indoor space). No advanced registration required.

For a playspace in Bed Stuy and one that actually has DROP OFF, see Little Lola and Tots. One hour long playspace with adults participation is available for $12 and day-long play passes to be used during the morning (9 am – 12 pm) and/or afternoon (2:30 – 5:30 pm) are available for $34. For children 0 – 4 years. Drop-off service available for children aged 1 – 4 years old on Wednesdays between 2:30 – 5:30 pm unless otherwise indicated on their calendar.
