Some great exhibits you can enjoy with your kids with spring:
Tarsila do Amaril: Inventing Modern Art in Brazil at Moma
In Brazil she is known by just her first name. Born at the end of the 19th century in Sao Paulo. Her style features lush landscapes while also deeply influenced by the other big names of Modernism that were her contemporaries. This is the first major show of her work in the United States.
Danh Vo: Take My Breath Away at the Guggenheim
This exhibit is a great way to let kids explore how art can be created with found objects placed in the context of a story. Vo uses objects, such as the mundane-seeming, like a washer, dryer and television that belonged to his grandmother, to more public, grander items like the chandeliers that decorated the Hôtel Majestic, the Parisian headquarters for the Nazis during the occupation. The effect is both autobiographical and historical. You could use it as a jumping off point to discuss what objects your children would want to use to represent themselves, their family and the world in which they live.
Georgia O’Keeffe: Visions of Hawaii at the New York Botanical Garden
As lovely as the warmer months are in New York, they’re not quite the paradise of Hawaii. Take a trip there without having to spend hours on a plane by hopping on the subway to the NYBG.
Rodin at the Brooklyn Museum: The Body in Bronze
The Brooklyn museum has a remarkable collection of Rodin bronze sculptures, many life size of the human form. Bring notebooks and let your kids take an impromptu life-drawing class with models that have perfected the art of staying still.
Hear, See, Play: Designing With Sound at Cooper Hewitt
What does good design sound like? And what exactly does a sound designer do? This exhibit is hands on and will give you and your kids the opportunity to find out.
