My daughter participated in her first egg hunt using plastic eggs this weekend and now our house is full of them. She has been asking me to open and close them and hiding new things inside of them all day. So naturally I am already thinking of ways to get rid of them–hopefully environmentally friendly ways.
I had no idea this was such a popular subject, be apparently it is. There are hundreds of articles online about it! BUT they are all pretty much the same. Most recommend using them for just what they are for, putting little prizes in and hiding them. As this is the exact purpose of plastic easter eggs, I don’t see that as something that should be on any list. Same with holding little snacks… or glueing eyes in them in general (I am trying to use them up or get rid of them not make them harder to get away from my kids, right?).
To save all the A Child Grows readers time, I compiled a list of the very best and most interesting ideas I could find plus a few of my own.
- Make ridiculously elaborate crafts with them. This seems to be popular. Almost every site includes one or more crafts you will probably never have time to make. This is one of my favorites from the DIY Network:
2. Twiniversity gives us two really great ones that are similar: store pantyhose (yes, I remember buying them like this!) or store beaded necklaces.
3. Make maracas… here is one craft I could see myself actually doing from KiwiCo.

from Kiwi Co – instructions on their website
4. Ok, so in general I am against making little animals out of them, but at least this idea from uses a lot of them! This one is found on almost every list: the egg caterpillar you string together with pipe cleaners (obviously we all have pipe cleaners lying around right?). Anyway, if you want the make the caterpillar, I thought Artzy Creations had the best instructions.

5. Warning: This one doesn’t actually get rid of the eggs, but it is interesting. Basically it is putting different things in the eggs to see if they will float, but it is a good activity for a little one. You have to cover the holes with tape so it might be tricky.
6. There are a hundred different alphabet and numbers matching games you can make with them. I may write letters on them with permanent marker and then see if my LO can put the right foam letter in the egg….right before I throw them away.
7. Use them to store change in for paying parking meters. I love this idea even though it doesn’t apply to those of us who live in NYC without cars. Except that works for one or two eggs only.
And the winner is:
If you have space, stack them together and save them for next year so you don’t have to buy them again and consume more junk (this was my husband’s idea and it is a good one).
