Suzi Shelton is a Brooklyn treasure, entertaining our kids all over the borough. Musicians like her are one of the reasons to love Brooklyn. Her new album, Hand-in-Hand, is an upbeat tribute to enjoying childhood. My favorite song is Ladybugs, which features a fun, jazzy trumpet performed by Tony Kadleck.

Suzi is mom to two teens in Brooklyn which keeps her pretty busy, but she still manages to perform everywhere. We have seen her several times (my daughter loves to spin around and jump to almost anything but seemed to especially enjoy Suzi’s concerts at the Park Slope Library and Brooklyn Free Space). She is also working on her fifth season of the fun Sing with Suzi videos on YouTube.

Suzi is hosting a free Facebook Live concert at 6pm on May 10 (with Vered Ronen (Baby In Tune), Amelia Robinson (Mil’s Trills) and Katie Ha Ha Ha) that we hope to share and participate in! And she will be at the Old Stone House performing on May 19th for Slope Safety Day.

We decided to ask her a few questions about her new album and one of her more memorable performances.

As this is your fourth album, how do you feel the music has evolved and what is driving the change, if any?

I feel that my music has actually gone on a huge journey to finally get to the place where I feel most comfortable. This latest album is very “me.” It’s eclectic, it’s pop and it’s indie. When I started out my music sounded more folksy and little bit country even, but I have always been a pop star at heart. My producers Greg Mayo and Dan Weiner helped me to showcases more of the styles of music that I like to listen to for this album. It still has the upbeat interactive songs that I love to play live for families to get them up and dancing, but it feels more modern. Perhaps I can say these songs are more mature, even?

Your daughter wrote one of the songs on the album. Was this something you encouraged or she decided on her own? Is she studying music independently or is this a family activity only?

My daughter Emma wrote the song “We Shall Walk,” based on an assignment from her chorus teacher in sixth grade (she’s in eighth grade now). She was studying piano at the time, and her piano teacher lovingly helped her prepare the song to present to the class, and I fell in love with it. I have always encouraged her to sing and write songs, but this was done all on her own. I was hoping that she would let me put it on the new album and she not only allowed me to use it, but she sang on it too! She no longer takes piano lessons, but she still finds creative ways to express herself and is starting to explore photography.

Tell me about performing at the White House? Why? How? (I assume Obama was President)

Believe it or not, we performed at the White House during the time that Bush was president, so sadly, I missed performing for Obama completely. However, it was quite an honor to be invited, and to bring my band and family to the White House lawn. We coincidentally opened for The Jonas Brothers, so we had a great big crowd of teenagers pumping their fists in the air and singing our tunes! It was a memory that I will never forget!
