Olive and Pearl, performed at BAM Fischer Hall and produced by Treehouse Shakers, is a story of the love between a grandmother and her granddaughter, and about learning to embrace imagination. The beautiful set and lovely guitar accompaniment help to pull kids quickly into Olive’s world. Fairly soon into the show you suspend your imagination and forget that the granddaughter is taller than the grandmother. The actress playing Olive really captured the spirit of a child’s imagination.

Olive and Pearl: The Right Plot for This Age

Some of the parents may find themselves fearfully awaiting the moment that something happens to Grandma, all the while knowing it won’t. It’s a play for small children, obviously nothing happens to grandma, but the blissful grandma/granddaughter bond is so celebrated that we instinctually sense it will break– I suppose that’s what Hollywood and HBO have done to us–but it doesn’t have to.

Nothing much happens, yet so much happens, in this short play. Don’t expect a story arch (it is roughly the arch of a day) but it doesn’t need one just because adults want it. The kids this age probably can’t follow much more than is offered. In this way, Olive and Pearl is in fact perfect for the three-year-old mind.

The most surprising part of the play was more from the audience than what was on stage. The kids were all quiet, engrossed in the play. My kid asked questions, but didn’t need to get up and run like she often does. I say that’s an A.

After the play, the kids were able play on the set with all of Olive’s play things. My daughter immediately made a “meal” and fed some to the cast.

Treehouse Shakers is a non-profit dance-theater company solely focused creating original work for young audiences. They provided us press passes for this performance, but this had no impact on my review of the production.
