Shelburne Farms is jewel just south of Burlington and near the ferry from  NY. It is perfect for kids, especially young ones.

From their website: “Shelburne Farms is a nonprofit organization educating for a sustainable future. That means learning that links knowledge, inquiry, and action to help students build a healthy future for their communities and the planet. Our home campus is a 1,400-acre working farm, forest, and National Historic Landmark.”

One of the reviewers on TripAdvisor (Char G) said, “We took our two grandchildren (ages 3 and 5) to Shelburne Farms, and a good time was had by all. I would highly recommend it. In fact, it may be the BEST experience for my grandchildren ever.” That’s a pretty positive review. The overall rating on that site was 4.5 out of 5, but I would say it is the best farm experience we have been to for little ones. We also stayed at a different working farm during our trip which was fantastic, but not the same as there was no safe to help kids, no toys, and no opportunity to actually touch things in a controlled, safe environment.

It is reviewed even better on Yelp with Brian D saying “Brought our 8 and 5 year old today – I would recommend catching the first trolley tractor thing of the morning (at 10) to see the chicken parade.”

What We Did at Shelburne (Milked a Cow)

We rode a tractor trailer, milked a cow, pet a sheep, built a goat playground, and watched sleeping pigs.

There is a farm-themed toy room. We also explored a chicken coop where you can collect eggs and an old tracker you can sit on.

They have a small lunch stand with food from the farm which is really good. And lemonade.

The farm is remarkably clean. Even though you are touching farm animals, there are places everywhere to wash your hands and they clean it constantly. It shows. Even the room full of toys and books is pretty clean, comparable with some play spaces we have visited.

One of the best parts of your visit will be the events for kids. They have a different schedule each day with things like chicken parades, milking cows, kidding round with kids (baby goats), brushing a horse, and more. You can also explore on your own. We found some pigs sleeping which was huge for my LO as she loves pigs in books but had never seen a real one.
