[Sponsored] A new school is opening in Brooklyn Heights with a giant living wall and a 300-gallon saltwater fish tank. They will have blue tongue skinks, crested geckos, bearded dragons, gerbils, hamsters, giant millipedes, stick bugs, and Madagascar roaches! The Brooklyn Preschool of Science aims to excite young kids about learning and to engage their innate curiosity about the world. Their age-appropriate, science-based curriculum taps into a child’s need to understand how things work, while providing a foundation for meaningful math, language, and literacy development.  This will be their third location (they already have successful schools in Cobble Hill and Park Slope). We asked the founder, Carmelo Piazza, a couple of pressing questions?

Do all the schools have animals? What else interesting do they have?
“Every location has walls of bio-diversity.  These animals vary from mammals like guinea pigs, gerbils, dwarf hamsters, and teddy bear hamsters.  We have amazing invertebrates like Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, Walking Sticks, Millipedes, and more. Every location also has an amazing living wall which has its own filtration, irrigation, and a hydration system.  Teaching my students to have a foundation in bio-diversity is imperative and this includes the wonderful world of plants. The school also has many museum like exhibits which are to keep our students engaged. These vary from LED light bright walls, magnetic gear walls, and magnetic Rube Goldberg inclined plane walls. “

Where did you get the idea for this school?
“I have been a science pedagogue for 20 years now and the dream of my schools has been evolving ever since I stepped foot into a classroom.  I consistently like to push the boundaries of education and want to ensure that my students have a spectacular holistic approach to education.”
How did you choose the new Brooklyn Heights Location?
“I have been part of this amazing community for two decades and opening up a location in Brooklyn Heights is like adding an extension to my family.”
What ages can attend the school?
“The school will accommodate children ages 2-5 years old.”
When does it open?
“We currently have two schools in operation and these locations are in Park Slope and Cobble Hill.  We are opening our Brooklyn Heights location in late September.”
