LOS KIDS: An Innovative Concert Series for Children and Families, ages 3-10

Inspiring Families in the Concert Hall

The Little Orchestra Society is beginning the 4th season of LOS KIDS, a concert series for children ages 3-10 and their families, at The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College. LOS KIDS is a fun-filled way to learn about great composers and fall in love with orchestral music. Each program focuses on an individual composer (e.g., Scott Joplin & Duke Ellington, Robert & Clara Schumann, Gioachino Rossini, and Ludwig van Beethoven) and introduces the audience to each composer as a person, with selections from her/his most cherished works, ways in which her/his music is unforgettable, and fundamentals of music through audience participation.

LOS KIDS brings featured composers into the concert hall “to visit,” along with the quirky Professor Treblemaker and his family (who act as our guides and learn along with the audience), our Music Director James Judd, and special guests. Each concert features specially created videos and animations, performances by accomplished young soloists along with our professional orchestra, and an original script – all designed to enhance audience engagement with the orchestral music that is at the core of all LOS performances.

LOS KIDS scripts are written on many levels to appeal to adults as well as children. In addition to instrumentalists and singers, guest artists have included dancers, circus performers, illustrators, and animators. Video segments have included visits to a woodwind instrument shop and the Steinway piano factory, specially recorded reports from the weather desk at cable TV channel NY1 that helped guide the audience on a journey through the Four Seasons in the Vivaldi program, real-time “Treblevision” close-ups of musicians as they perform live on stage, and an animated version of Professor Treblemaker stepping and leaping across a musical staff to illustrate the concept of musical intervals in the Beethoven program.

Expanding Access to the Arts and Love of Music

More than a third of the 16,000 children and family members who attended the concerts, dress rehearsals, and public service performances in 2016-17 attended without charge as they could not otherwise have afforded tickets. The series has been extremely well received, consistently selling to capacity; in response to demand, they expanded the schedule in 2018-19 with the addition of an extra performance on Sundays, for a total of 20 weekend performances, four open dress rehearsals, and four public service concerts.

4-Concert Subscriptions, 2-Concert Packages, and Single Tickets are now available at littleorchestra.org/concerts or by calling 212.971.9500
