I’m not a huge consumer, but when I do buy anything, it’s either a staple item I have to restock grudgingly, or a gift. Whenever possible, I like my gifts to be local, homemade, or both. So, for the gift guide, I asked everyone to look for items that were “good” in some way. Not everything qualifies, but we definitely found some good choices. Some of the options for last year are also pretty good this year as well.
We were lucky to work with Uncommon Goods, a local Brooklyn B-Corp with a focus on sustainability . They provided us a few sample items I love (disclaimer), but we are not paid anything to send you their way. I just think they are great. We often work with a small press and pop-up bookshop in Brooklyn, Big Wonderful Press, which shares some ownership interest, but they really are local and small. Much better than Amazon, although we do have affiliate links in here for them as well for the people who choose to go in that direction (no judgement–I do it too sometimes).
Here are some great gift ideas grouped by intended recipient. Please note that we will continue to add to this list so check back!

The Mom
I love the Links of Love necklace made by Nashville artist Beth Lawrence. It’s very nicely designed and classic. I am getting one for my own mother as well. There is also one called Past, Present, and Future with three rings, but I think it could be great for a grandma. I also like the infinity scarves by Tori Tissell. Mine has the words from Pride and Prejudice and everywhere I go people try to read it.

For Your Best Friend or Sister
These Girls Gone Happy cards retail for $24.95 but may save you hundreds of dollars in coaching or even counseling. I went through the Clarity deck and found it was better than a life coach or at least what I think a life coach would be like (I am in introvert after all), but the Loss deck and Motherhood deck may be more in therapy territory. In any case, these cards really make you think. Girls Gone Happy was invented by Justine Haemmerli, also the founder of Make it Right PHL, who has worked in NYC schools and lives part-time in Philly (another achildgrows.com hotspot!).

In-Laws or Office Parties
These cute and funny dish towels are illustrated by Jodi, a former New Yorker now living in DC, and sold through her nice online shop. I like the Figgy Dish Towel.

For Little Boys and Big Boys
Little boys will love the construction eating set while big ones (and by that I really mean adults) will enjoy this beautiful boat kite you put together yourself. Both are from Uncommon Goods.

For Little Girls
If your little girl doesn’t have a shiny backpack already or a glitter one.. here is a good choice. It’s also getting to be time for snow boots. Plus, I love this t-shirt by Sat Nam babe founder Jennifer Coulombe.

Beautiful Books for Any Kid
Selections from the Big Wonderful Press pop-up children’s bookstore in Brooklyn. These are the books that I have been gifting as they are beautiful and timeless. Also, on the right is a link to our recent post about gifts for teachers–always a hot topic.
