It feels like summer and we’re thinking ahead to those hot days when we just want to spend all day in a swimming pool. Fortunately, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor swimming pools all over Brooklyn where we can cool off, get exercise, and enjoy the summer with our families. While some are membership only, there are many free or reasonable options with day passes. Many of them also offer swimming classes and other fitness classes and facilities. Their Athletic Center pool is open to the community for recreational use during early mornings, evenings, and weekends (September through July only). They offer a variety of membership options in addition to group classes for adults and children. The Community Family Swim membership allows parents with young children to use their indoor pool all year long (except for August). They remove two lane lines to create an open area to splash around and swim. Lap swimming is not permitted during family swim times. In addition to offering popular swimming and sports classes for all ages, Camp Olympia’s All Sports for All People also has “Family Swim” sessions at indoor swimming pools at John Jay High School, Erasmus Hall, and International High School at Prospect Heights for only $7 per person. You do not need to register in advance (first come, first served) but you can now buy Family Swim Packages to save more money per session. They also have “Lap Swim” sessions for $10 per person in the International High School on Saturdays. Pool hours are from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily, with a break for pool cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Bring a towel and combination lock to keep valuables safely stored while you swim. DO NOT bring food, glass bottles, electronic devices, and newspapers. You must wear a swimsuit to enter the pool area and you can wear a plain white shirt or white hat only to cover up from the sun. YMCA Swimming Pools
The Prospect Park YMCA has two indoor pools that are always busy with swimming lessons, lap swim, family swim, and recreational swim. Unfortunately the smaller pool is closed for repairs, but the large pool is open and Prospect Park Y members have city-wide access to all YMCAs during the closure. And there are plenty of other YMCAs with swimming pools in the borough: Dodge YMCA, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Greenpoint, and more. They do not offer day passes for the pools, but you can sign up for the special city-wide YMCA summer membership before June 30th ($225 per adult or $325 per family) which includes access to pools, classes, and everything else the YMCA has to offer all summer.
