NO MORE MONSTERS UNDER YOUR BED (on-sale July 9, 2019) by Brooklyn-based author Jordan Chouteau, illustrated by NYC-based Anat Even Or is a classic kids’ monster romp with adorable pictures and a fun pretend idea for kids with an included No-More-Monsters “magic” patch.
My feelings about this book were generally good, it is a lot of fun, but I was concerned with the idea of helping kids with a fear of monsters using a little “magic”–not because I am opposed to fairy tales in general–but because my kid was NOT afraid of monsters, yet. I was concerned that introducing the idea of scary monsters hiding all around the room might create a new fear… but it didn’t. She thought it was funny.
Maybe Jordan Chouteau understands kids better than me. She certainly did a great job answering these questions I developed about the book with a few very small house guests.

Tough Questions for Author Jordan Chouteau

Jordan Chouteau
Is this a true story about helping your son get over a fear of monsters? Was it hard to get him to give up the patch? Did he ever lose it?
It was actually my niece who had a mild monster problem. She wore the patch and got rid of her monsters almost immediately. She never lost the patch, but only because she was super diligent about putting it back in the book every morning. A lot of other kids I know weren’t so diligent and their moms called me looking to see if I had an extra patch, or three.
You have a family dog, does the dog help chase away the monsters in your house? Did the dog get his own magic monster patch?
Nope! Our dog is not only afraid of monsters, she hides under the covers when it rains or when someone uses the blender. Sadly, the no more monsters patch doesn’t work for our poor dog, Bird.
“The boy was worried that if he fell asleep the monster would do horrible things to him.” What type of horrible things do you imagine the monsters would do? Lick her feet or pee on the bed?
There is one monster who is known for keeping kids awake with his loud, thunderous burps. Apparently the smell is worse than microwaving broccoli.
I’ve also heard stories about monsters who stick things up kids’ noses, borrow their toothbrushes, even ones that try on their clothes – stretching them out so much that kids have to grow another four years for them to fit again.
Why did the monster not eat all the food in the fridge?
Well, considering he ate an entire tuna casserole and washed it down with a glass of milk, I’d imagine he was way too full to eat anymore.
Why does the monster turn the light off and on?
They do it to keep the kids from sleeping. I also hear it happens when the monsters decide to throw a late night dance party.
Why did they go to the moon even though there are no kids on the moon?
I guess it’s because alien kids are easily scared, too.
What happened to the monster covered in boo-boos?
Well, when your whole body is covered in sharp horns, you poke yourself.
My favorite monster is the grandpa monster, which is your favorite?
I like the monster with all the cavities in his teeth because he has a worm living in his tooth.
