Día de los Muertos Family Celebration at Green-Wood Cemetery
Friday November 1st 330-6p. Free. Open to families with children of all ages. Join us for an afternoon celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with crafts, storytelling, and snacks.Throughout Mexico, from October 31 to November 2, departed loved ones are commemorated through prayer, offerings, altars, music, dance, and food.
Family Movie: Coco at Brooklyn Heights Public Library
Friday November 1st 330-5p. Free. Join us for a screening of the Disney Pixar film Coco! Rated PG. “A boy journeys into the Land of the Dead to seek forgiveness from his ancestors and lift a curse.”
Hippo Halloween Parade in Riverside Park (UWS)
Friday November 1st 330-530p. Free. Location: Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument Plaza and Hippo Playground. Put on your costumes and bring the family to join the Hippo Playground Project for some Halloween fun! Gather at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument (89th Street & Riverside Drive) in your costume and be part of this annual parade to Hippo Playground, where you can join us for some free sweets, apple cider, and live music.
Aesop’s Fables at the New Victory Theater
Friday November 1st 7p, Saturday November 2nd 2p & 7p and Sunday November 3rd 12n & 5p. Tickets start at $17. For everyone 7 and up. Running Time: 70 minutes with no intermission. When Aesop escapes his master and embarks on a journey to Mount Olympus, he learns some very valuable lessons, like “where there’s a will there’s a way” and “look before you leap!” You’ll happily keep your eyes wide and your ears open to take in the colorful costumes, enthralling dance and spirited sounds of South Africa in this vibrant opera by the incomparable Isango Ensemble. Sung through in English and a mix of South African languages with a soaring live score of marimba music, sound advice sure sounds sunny in AESOP’S FABLES.

Moove to the Moozika! Concert at City Point (Downtown Brooklyn)
Saturday November 2nd 10a. $10 advanced tickets. Purchase tickets here. Location: DeKalb Stage located in the DeKalb Market Hall. Brooklyn favorites Jesse Goldman and Moozika! are ready to raise the roof and kick up their heels with a family show to celebrate the release of the debut Moozika! album Moove to the Moozika! Kids and families should come ready to join in the bilingual fun at Moozika’s highly interactive album release show, where they’ll be encouraged to sing, dance, and move along to each and every song. Moozika! is excited to play music from the new album, and, as a special treat, kids will be invited onstage to sing with the band on some of the numbers. Spontaneous composition interludes, where bandleader Jesse Goldman creates playful new music “in the moment” with the audience, are sure to be highlights of this performance. With fun costumes, puppets, and more, Moozika! really plans to outdo itself and make this a show to remember!
Family Workshop: Beyond Geographies at BRIC House (Fort Greene)

Create richly decorated folded paper sculptures and patterned mixed-media collages inspired by works in the exhibition Beyond Geographies: Contemporary Art and Muslim Experience. Inspired by works reflecting the contemporary Muslim experience in our exhibition Beyond Geographies: Contemporary Art and Muslim Experience, families will have the opportunity to engage in two hands-on activities directly inspired by works on view. Families will also get a chance to explore the exhibition through a Gallery Scavenger Hunt.
LC Kids: Gustafer Yellowgold at David Rubenstein Atrium (UWS)
Saturday November 2nd 11a. Free. For ages 2-5y. Gustafer Yellowgold returns to the Atrium, bringing his funny and touching multimedia performance—including live music, animation, and quirky storytelling—to tell of his imaginative explorations of the Minnesota woods where he landed. Morgan Taylor’s beloved animated visitor from the sun has opened for Wilco and The Polyphonic Spree, appeared Off-Broadway, and been honored by NAPPA (National Parenting Products Awards), the Kids First! Film Festival, and the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Performance length: approximately 1 hour. The atmosphere at Atrium events is celebratory, relaxed, and suitable for most audiences. Sensory supports (noise-cancelling headphones and fidgets) are available to borrow.
Calpulli Community Celebrates Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) at Central Brooklyn Public Library
Saturday November 2nd 1-2p. Free. Location: Dweck Center. Join young dancers from Calpulli Community as they perform to festive songs in honor of dia de muertos (day of the dead), a native Mexican tradition that celebrates the unending bonds between us and our loved ones.
Diwali Dance Party: Kathak, Bhangra & Beyond at Flushing Town Hall
Saturday November 2nd 1-4p. Tickets: $20 adult, $15 member, $10 child/student, free for teens. Celebrate Diwali with this all-ages festival and dance party, featuring Kathak classical dancer Abha Roy and Basement Bhangra’s DJ Rekha! Learn Bollywood, bhangra, and Kathak dance moves, then hit the dance floor! This program includes: Kathak dance workshop, Cooking workshops, Indian games, Henna painting, Indian dress display and workshop, Ayurvedic workshop, Kathak performance with Abha Roy, Indian jewelry workshop, Bhangra dance workshop, DJ Rekha bhangra performance, Dance Party. Indian foods and handicrafts for sale! Not all programs run 1pm to 4pm, so please arrive at 1pm to enjoy the entire festival.

Día de los Muertos at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Sunday November 3rd 10a-5p. Free with Museum admission. Did you know that Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is the Mexican holiday that brings family and friends together to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have passed away? Now celebrated all over the world, families mark the festival by making colorful altars and sharing meals with loved ones. This year, we invite you to celebrate with us and experience the delicious flavors and cultural traditions of the holiday. Join a Spanish language lesson with Espáñate, make art inspired by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada, and bake your own Pan de Muertos with Don Paco López Panaderia located right here in Brooklyn! This year, we are also excited to host Somos Familia (We Are Family), a pop-up podcast produced in partnership with Hendel Leiva of Immigration MIC. Inspired by Día de los Muertos, community members share memories, hopes, dreams and reflections that honor and celebrate family.

BAMkids Movie Matinee: Okko’s Inn (Fort Greene)

After losing her parents in a car accident, a young girl goes to live with her grandmother at her country inn where she discovers both a newfound sense of purpose and unexpected companions in the form of friendly, mischievous spirits only she can see. Beautifully animated in a colorfully energetic style, this sweetly uplifting ghost story from Studio Ghibli alum Kitarô Kôsaka is a heartfelt tale about acceptance and the ways we process grief.
Halloween Tinker Festival at Lewis Latimer House Museum (Flushing)

Holiday Express: All Aboard to Richard Scarry’s Busytown at New-York Historical Society (UWS)
Opening Friday November 1st and ongoing until February. Museum hours: Tuesday-Thursday 10a-6p, Friday 10a-8p, Saturday 10a-6p & Sunday 11a-5p. Free with Museum admission. Holiday Express returns to New-York Historical this holiday season, reimagined to celebrate the 100th birthday of Busytown author and illustrator Richard Scarry. The installation showcases artwork and graphics of Scarry’s characters (like Huckle Cat and Lowly Worm!) from publisher Penguin Random House alongside Jerni Collection toys. Children and adults can also experience dynamic displays exploring the workings of the railroad, the services it provides, and the jobs required to keep people and goods moving.
NYC Winter Lantern Festival x WTC Pop-Up in Liberty Park (Financial District)
Ongoing 6a-11p until November 16th. Free Kick off the holiday season with a special preview of the 2019 NYC Winter Lantern Festival at the World Trade Center. The spectacular lantern display features 12 hand-crafted zodiac animals from the Lunar Calendar, each with their own special meaning. Take a stroll with your family and friends through Liberty Park and enjoy the festive glow of lights.
Conservation Heroes at Prospect Park Zoo

Survival of the Slowest at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Ongoing until February 2nd 2020. Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 10a-5p, Thursday 10a-6p & Saturday-Sunday 10a-7p. Free with Museum admission. Meet Roger the sloth! He has two toes, lives in Central America, and is visiting Brooklyn with his friends. Learn about how slow animals survive and thrive in our fast-paced world at BCM’s newest exhibit. Survival of the Slowest features 19 distinct habitats with live animals, including Roger the two-toed sloth, a blood python, a roughneck monitor lizard, and many more. Each day this exhibit will offer up-close experiences with slow and small species that survive and thrive in a world where large, strong, and fast animals are often at the top of the food chain. Survival of the Slowest prompts families to appreciate the different evolutionary paths of these incredible creatures, and showcases the value of deliberation in our fast-paced city. While exploring Survival of the Slowest, young visitors will explore concepts of biology and evolutionary science. Live animal presentations are offered throughout the day to educate, entertain, and most importantly, connect visitors with wildlife and nature.
The Art of the Brick at New York Hall of Science
Daily through January 26th. General hours ~ Monday–Friday: 930a-5p and Saturday–Sunday: 10a-6p. Entry to the exhibition costs $7 per person, plus NYSCI admission. Experience The Art of the Brick, the world’s largest display of LEGO® art! Artist Nathan Sawaya created more than 100 pieces for this exhibition using only LEGO bricks. The collection features original pieces, as well as re-imagined versions of some of the world’s most famous art masterpieces.
