How to Organize When You’re Exhausted

While New Yorkers are often stressed, frenzied and exhausted, it seems that many of us are driving ourselves into the ground even more than usual.

Whether we’re getting hammered by cold and flu season or more specific life events – post-partum depression, ailing parents, preschool admissions anxiety or other stressors, we could all use a bit more love (and sunshine!)

This shares Urban Clarity’s best tips for organizing when your energy is low. It’s a cheat sheet for how to practice more of the self-care and compassion that you and the world needs right now.

5 Tips for Organizing When You’re Exhausted

 1. Be Kind To Yourself – Log off Pinterest and quiet that voice in your head – the one telling you you’re not doing it well enough.  Replace it with comforting, encouraging thoughts. Remind yourself that “This will all work out” or “I am enough.” If you retrain yourself to be more compassionate, it all gets easier.
2. Play to Your Strengths.  If you’re a morning person, take 10 minutes before breakfast to do a task. If you peak at night, carve out time then. It’s better to do a little – even 5 minutes putting away laundry is an improvement. Annoying things get easier by doing them at your peak time.
3. Practice Better Self-Care.  It can be as simple as reminding yourself to breathe deeply, or drink that extra glass of water. Or seven. Go for a walk or call a friend you love. If you increase your energy, you’ll have time to do more.
4. Resistance is futile – If you’re absolutely exhausted, don’t fight it – resistance will make tasks more painful. Honestly, just go take a nap! And if you need another one tomorrow, that’s fine. Really and truly, be kind to yourself.
5. Ask for Help – Can’t articulate what you need? That can be the best time to reach out to your network. Have a friend come over to hold your baby so you can take a shower, talk to a therapist or a life coach, book a session with a professional organizer. We all need support – don’t be afraid to ask for it.
