Will We Never Need a New Car Seat Again?

Maxi-Cosi Magellan all-in-one convertible car seat says it fits from birth to 10 years (5 to 120 pounds).  My child is small, so that may mean until she has her first child in her 30’s. Thank goodness it’s washable.

With the recent article in the Washington Post about knockoff car seats, I love that this seat is both officially safe and feels very safe. It is very stable, if a bit heavy. We took this seat on a road trip and it was perfect for long days in the car. My daughter loved the cup (snack) holders because it meant she always had reachable snacks, and I loved that they were these removable rubber cups that were easily washable. I also loved that it was comfortable enough for her to fall asleep in without her head just falling forward all the time. She is far from a baby, but still sleeps like one

We did think the seat would be best for putting in a car and keeping it there. It isn’t designed for carrying between hired cars and putting on strollers. This is a the 8-piece sectional of car seats. It belongs in places where where people drive everywhere or in the cars of those lucky folks with a permanent parking space.

 Let’s talk about some of the features we explored.

The seat takes takes up a fair amount of the space in the backseat, but there is still enough room for two adults as well, at least for a short trip.  Of course, this is in a Prius, so a larger car would make it easier.

Rear facing mode is always safer, but we felt that either way was pretty secure in this car seat. Once you get the hang of the seat belt attachments it is easy to set up.  Again, even in this very small Prius, everything fits.

With the well designed strap covers, Teddy didn’t complain about any discomfort at all, and he really liked having two cup holders – one for milk or water, and one for a collection of leaves and twigs.

Here is a better view from the front- the head rest is set a bit high for the bear, but it was easy to set to the correct height for our daughter.

Using both the seatbelt and the click in strap seems redundant, but it really keeps things extra secure.  Taking it in and out is a bit of extra work this way, but most people will probably just leave the seat in.

We never used to know what these little hooks in cars were for, but now I see that they are for the straps on a car seat!  This one tightens up really easily.
