‘Tis the season for holiday cheer… and multi-tasking. As we prepare our Thanksgiving feasts, we are already plotting the frenzy of holiday events coming up right after (and in some cases before) Thanksgiving. J.J. Byrne Park, 5th Ave & 4th St (Park Slope)
The Park Slope tree lighting ceremony kicks off the holiday season at J.J. Byrne Park on Saturday, November 30th. The event will feature music by local children’s musician Dr. Alex, stilt walkers and steel drummers from Tropical Fete, Bubbledad, treats from Down to Earth Markets, and more. Santa will be driving around in a vintage car before arriving for the tree lighting at 6 PM.

Lefferts Historic House (Prospect Park)
Experience an afternoon of 19th Century winter fun at the Lefferts Historic House with Dutch treats, wool spinning, and of course a visit from Saint Nicholas, who will arrive on horseback to present children with treats and give them a chance to feed his horse (3 PM). The Lefferts Historic House was built by a Dutch family in the 18th-century farming village of Flatbush and features a working garden, historic artifacts, period rooms and exhibits. Go to the

Join the annual festivities on Atlantic Avenue starting with caroling by Brooklyn High School of the Arts (5:20-5:45 PM) followed by the tree lighting ceremony officiated by Council Member Stephen Levin (6 PM). Meet Santa and stay for the holiday party, which will include holiday performances by local schools, a family dance party, and refreshments. They will also be announcing the winners of the Annual Atlantic Avenue Merchant Holiday Window Competition.

Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum, 5816 Clarendon Road (East Flatbush)
This old-fashioned Dutch Christmas celebration at NYC’s oldest house will start with a traditional concert by colonial balladeer Linda Russell at 1 PM. There will be a visit from the original Santa Claus, who arrives on horseback at 2:30 PM. In the Dutch tradition, visitors can feed the horse carrots and hay. Learn about how Sinterklaas evolved into the tradition of St. Nicholas while enjoying crafts, music, snacks, and decorating the tree for the tree lighting at the end of the day. Children are invited to sign the Red Book with St. Nicholas. If you’d like to take photos with Santa and sign the “red book,” you need to purchase tickets online
here. $7 for general admission (ages 11+) and $4 for child tickets (ages 3-10).

The 15th annual tree lighting event includes “Carols, Calypso, and Cocoa” in addition to the tree lighting and another opportunity to meet Santa Claus on Thursday, December 5th in the Pearl Street Triangle. Calypso music will be performed by Brooklyn-based steel drum band Jah Pan and caroling by PS307 and Dock Street Middle school choirs and more. Hot cocoa and sweet treats as well animated videos projected onto the Manhattan Bridge! The tree will be lit at 6 PM sharp.

Enter the park at 3rd Avenue and Douglass Street.

It’s a great quick option for people who don’t have a lot of time during the busy season – and you can do some holiday shopping at this local store while you’re there! Each child enjoys a five-minute session with Santa while a photographer takes photos. You’ll leave the store with a flash drive full of images to keep. This one isn’t in Brooklyn, but if you want the classic NYC Christmas experience, you can’t beat Macy’s Santaland on the 8th floor of Macy’s in Herald Square. You can make an
online reservation starting November 25th and choose a 30-minute time slot up to 5 days in advance of your visit. And you will still have to wait in a long line when you arrive…but they do generally keep the line moving. If you like, you can purchase a Santa Express Lane pass (Friday through Sunday only), which will allow you to bypass all of the Santaland village attractions and head directly to Santa. Time slots are subject to availability. Regular admission is free but you will have to purchase professional photos if you want them. Packages start at $22.

Sensory-Friendly Santa session with Autism Speaks on December 15th. While you’re there, you can also check out the
Luminaries exhibit or go ice skating on the waterfront.
