Our Future Suburbanites

Carly and David* joined the FromCityTo.com community during the summer of 2019. Carly is a stay at home mom with one 3 year-old daughter and a baby boy on the way, so she was eager to find her perfect new place in the suburbs. Carly and David had been living in Brooklyn for about 9 years together. David works for a financial company in Midtown NYC so he had some concerns about commuting. Both had grown up in the Tri-State area but really weren’t that familiar with the nuances of all the different counties and towns.

Getting Started with FromCityTo.com

After registering on our site they scheduled their #SuburbanSuccessCall and they summarized their community and home needs, wants and wishes using our client questionnaire. The first intro call was amazing! We set it up for 9 pm after the kiddies went to sleep and we spoke for about 30 minutes. I remember how excited they were to share their dreams and visions with me and how thankful they were for my time with them. After our call I put on my Suburbs of NYC expert hat and got to work finding towns for them to discover and research. We had another call to review and discuss the pros and cons of each and we narrowed down the list to Port Washington (Long Island), Larchmont / Mamaroneck (Westchester) and Montclair / Upper Montclair (Essex County NJ).

Town Research & Community Tours

I sent up intro calls with our local partners who live in each town so they could ask questions and learn first-hand about the town vibe, newcomers clubs, SAHM vs Working Mom populations, the school system, summer activities, the commute to NYC, train parking, special town events, dining options and town amenities. After the calls they went out on our 2 hour signature community tours of all three towns – because nothing beats a private curated tour of your potential new home town. After the tours we had a follow-up call to talk through the town differences, likes and dislikes and ultimately they decided to dive deep into Upper Montclair NJ. They loved what they heard from our local partners about the vibe, the schools, the downtown, and the commute to NYC.

Home Sweet Home

During the entire process we had talked about not only the community selection process but also the “first-time” home buyer process – mortgage pre-qualifications/pre-approvals, bidding wars, closing attorneys, inspectors, movers. We reminded them to check out the local nursery schools and elementary schools so they could tour them and be sure to register as well. We also talked about any bumps that can happen along the journey – from compromises they might need to make, to bidding war frustrations, to negotiating inspection items… We truly believe anything is possible and can be made more enjoyable with proper education, planning and preparing. Eventually our local real estate partner found them an amazing home and 3 months later the report was they were thrilled with their new community and home.
