My husband and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if there was a special code or pattern to ROAR LIKE A DANDELION by Ruth Krauss and illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier. Other than each page starting with the next letter in the alphabet, we never found one. Each suggestion from “Eat all the locks off the doors” to “Undress to match the trees in winter” is thoroughly absurd, but I’m not sure that is the point. Kids don’t always register absurd because to them life is absurd. What could possibly be more absurd than their parents sitting in an office all day talking to somehow get them food and toys..? Why on earth does everyone have to wear clothes when it is hot?

But trust in Ruth Krauss (author of The Carrot Seed), this book will grow on you. And the drawings are amazing.  Once you stop worrying about how it is trying to teach and just read it for fun, it’s fun. That’s what really counts.

Coming out March 3rd (you can pre-order it) is a new board book perfect for little girls and boys who have just started the tutu phase. You know what I mean. I LOVE MY TUTU TOO is a counting book, with lots of alliteration, about tutus and friends. Written and illustrated by Ross Burach, author of The Very Impatient Caterpillar, there is even a bit of addition included with these fun rhymes. “We TWO tunas love tutus too” yell a couple of fish who want to join the fun.

THE NIGHT WORLD by Mordicai Gerstein is magical. Mr. Gerstein is already a legend and the book is not new, but if you haven’t read this to your children, you are missing out. The story shows how the dark changes a house and a yard into a different world, complete with nocturnal animals rushing around with an urgent message “It’s coming.” The “It” is the sun, and it marks the end of one world and the beginning of another. I would read this book every night if my daughter let me. Be sure not to miss the author’s note at the end. Our copy is currently running out of renewal opportunities at the Brooklyn Public Library. If you put it on your hold list, you may get it next. I’m going to have to buy a copy.

Odd Dog Ou

Rob Diddulph’s ODD DOG OUT is full of amazing illustrations that can’t help but make you smile. The story is a classic, be yourself even it that makes you different from everyone else, but using playful dachshunds is a fun new take. It’s a great addition to the award-winning BLOWN AWAY.
