A New Season for L.O.S Kids

The Little Orchestra Society’s 2020-2021 streamed season of L.O.S. KIDS will debut on October 17th with “An L.O.S. Halloween Bash! – The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” Now in a new streamed format, the innovative L.O.S. concert series is a fantastic way to introduce kids (ages 3-10) to great composers and help them develop a love of orchestral music. This year’s programs are bringing to life a Halloween-themed concert, Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel, the music of Dvořák, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition for a new generation. Each program introduces the audience to composers as people, with selections from their most cherished works, ways in which their music is unforgettable, and fundamentals of music through audience participation.

L.O.S. KIDS brings featured composers to the screen “to visit,” along with the quirky Professor Treblemaker and his family (who act as our guides and learn along with the audience).  Concerts will be led by L.O.S. Artistic Advisor David Alan Miller and L.O.S. Associate Conductor Jane Kim, and star kids’ favorite, Professor Treblemaker. Each concert features specially created videos and animations, performances by accomplished young soloists along with our professional orchestra, and an original script – all designed to enhance audience engagement with the orchestral music that is at the core of all L.O.S. performances.

L.O.S. KIDS scripts are written on many levels to appeal to adults as well as children. In addition to instrumentalists and singers, guest artists have included dancers, circus performers, illustrators, and animators. Video segments have included visits to a woodwind instrument shop and the Steinway piano factory, specially recorded reports from the weather desk at cable TV channel NY1 that helped guide the audience on a journey through the Four Seasons in the Vivaldi program, and an animated version of Professor Treblemaker stepping and leaping across a musical staff to illustrate the concept of musical intervals in the Beethoven program.

Expanding Access to the Arts and Love of Music

Under the leadership of its Artistic Advisor, David Alan Miller, L.O.S. also shares live performances beyond the concert hall through music education and community engagement in New York City schools, museums, libraries, and senior centers. Last year, L.O.S. reached nearly 25,000 New York City area children, adults, and seniors, of whom almost 5,000 attended concerts free-of-charge. These transformative initiatives welcome not only thousands of participants to L.O.S. concerts, they inspire audiences to make music and concertgoing a lifelong pursuit.
