NYPL: The Multicultural Cowpoke, Hopalong Andrew!
Tuesday October 20th 330p. Free. Hopalong Andrew’s program honors the incredible but true multicultural history of the American West and celebrates the multicultural America of today, while recalling the empowering values associated with the iconic cowpoke: a “can do” spirit, resilience (or “true grit”), ingenuity, wry humor and wit. This program acknowledges the contributions to America’s Western heritage by peoples of all backgrounds with songs such as “Cowboys of Color,” and “The Rainbow Cowpoke Coalition.” This history is acknowledged in song: “Cowboy” ranching skills were largely learned from the Mexican vaqueros, who were of Spanish and indigenous ancestry, and were and are a large presence in the American West. The term “cowboy” was initially a reference to Black men who, with skills learned from the vaqueros, handled ranching duties in Texas beginning in the 1850s. As ranches grew in the late 19th Century it is estimated that one-in-four cowboys were Black, some were from Native American nations, such as the Comanche and Cherokee, many were White immigrants from the east or Europe, and of course many were of Mexican heritage. Some of our most famous early cowboys were people of color, such as Nat Love, a Black man, and Will Rogers, of the Cherokee Nation. In today’s America there continue to be cowboys and cowgirls of all backgrounds. Our audience in New York City reflects this historical truth, including the phenomenon where many of our newest immigrants embody the winsome combination of “cowboy” characteristics. Tune in here.
