It’s getting colder and holidays are approaching…which means more school breaks will be here before we know it! If you’re wondering what to do with kids stuck at home without school to keep them busy, we hear you. There’s no denying it – this winter is going to be tough. Fortunately, as usual, our local camps and enrichment programs are stepping up to fill in for schools and keep our kids engaged during school breaks. And of course these local businesses need our support now more than ever, so please consider enrolling in a day or two (or even a week) of camp to keep them going AND keep your kids busy and happy when schools are closed. IN PERSON + VIRTUAL – NORY is offering in person and virtual camps on upcoming school holidays including Winter Break, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and President’s Day. During in person camps, innovator kids (ages 3-10) get to spend the day building and programming robots and learning about builder’s engineering, motion & matters physics, and blast chemistry all while having fun and playing with friends. Their virtual day camps give kids (ages 5-12) the opportunity to play and socialize with friends while building robots and engineering design challenges from home. Materials for the robotic and engineering projects will be mailed to your home in advance of camp.

Brooklyn Game Lab
IN PERSON + VIRTUAL – BGL is offering a variety of Winter Break program options including Indoor + Outdoor Play (full day), Afternoon Outdoor Lab (half day), and Dungeons & Dragons Online (morning or afternoon sessions). During the indoor + outdoor sessions, kids (6-13) spend the morning playing games in their Center Slope location (with strict health and safety protocols) and spend the afternoon in Prospect Park playing active outdoor games. In the Afternoon Outdoor Lab, kids (ages 6-14) spend the whole afternoon outside in Prospect Park playing active games like “Battle Lab” with safe, foam swords as well as other active, fun, and social gaming. Dungeons & Dragons Online allows kids (ages 6-16) to play virtually during interactive morning or afternoon sessions via Zoom.

IN PERSON – The skateboarding school is offering 2-day or 3-day camps during upcoming school breaks to reduce variation between groups. School Break camps are designed for kids (ages 7-13) of all levels to try out skateboarding and develop new skills. After kids are placed in small groups based on levels, they spend most of the day skating in Prospect Park or a nearby playground (weather permitting) and skating and learning in the SKATEYOGI indoor facility equipped with H13 HEPA air filtration. Skate park etiquette and other topics are introduced throughout the camp.

Brooklyn Museum Winter Camp: Drawing and Mixed-Media
VIRTUAL – Inspired by their “KAWS: What a Party” exhibit, Brooklyn Museum is offering an online winter art camp for young artists to engage with art, interact with other campers, work with different mediums, try out new techniques, and more. Kids (ages 8-10 and 11-13) will participate in four days of art-making, including live daily instruction by museum educators and teaching artists, followed by the opportunity to share their work during online Open Studio at the end of the week. VIRTUAL – Treasure Trunk will be offering two online theater camps this winter break. Online Holiday Camp (12/21-12/23) allows kids (ages 3-6) to spend each day learning about a different culture’s winter holiday, working on a choreographed dance, and creating artwork for each holiday. Online Winter Friends Camp (12/28-12/31) gives kids a chance to explore the world of drama and dance using the themes and music from favorite winter stories. Both camps include plenty of dramatic games and theatrical exploration while kids learn essential theater skills and terms, engage in dramatic play, explore dance and movement, and create artwork. Kids (ages 2-7) can also participate in free Saturday morning “Winter Wonderland” holiday events on 12/12 and 12/19.

VIRTUAL – They offer 3-hour “Foundry Funday” online mini sessions during Winter Break, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and February Break. Kids (ages 6-10) get to participate in robot building activities based on a fun themes like “Party Like it’s Not 2020” and “Puppy Party.” There will also be games, crafts, and movement. You can sign up for one three-hour session in the morning or afternoon–or sign up for back-to-back sessions with a lunch break in between. Materials will be shipped to you in advance, so it’s good to sign up at least 10 days in advance to allow time for standard shipping.

IN PERSON – The nature-oriented Brooklyn day camp gets kids away from screens to engage in outdoor play and learning over Christmas Break, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Lunar New Year, and February Mid-Winter Break. Kids (grades PreK-5) bundle up and spend time outside connecting with nature and going on outdoor adventures where they learn about the environment and play with friends. Most of the days will be spent in Prospect Park, but they will use their local programming space as a place to warm up indoors.

Gotham Gymnastics – (IN PERSON) The gymnastics school will offer flexible full or half-day Mini Camps when schools are closed this winter for Winter Break, MLK Jr. Day, Lunar New Year, and February Break. You can also sign up for daily or weekly or recurring daily (every Monday, for example) sessions throughout the spring semester. Kids (ages 3+) spend the day doing gymnastics and playing games that build strength, confidence and flexibility. Child’s Play NY – (VIRTUAL) The Theater Camp offers Virtual Holiday Camps where children (ages 4-11) create stories together, sing, dance and use their imaginations during Winter Break. Experienced theater teachers help campers explore literature, act out adventures, and build their social-emotional and executive function skills while at home. The week-long virtual camp options include Adventure Series (ages 4-6) and Mythology Players (ages 7-11) and classes meet for two 45-minute Zoom sessions every morning with a break in between. Daily drop-ins are welcome. Dates: Winter Break (12/28-1/1) / Ages: 4-6 and 7-11 / Location: Virtual / Cost: $150 for the full week or $30 per child per day
TechExplorersBK – (IN PERSON) Full-Day School Holiday Camps take place on all school breaks throughout the fall and winter. Kids (PreK-8th Grade) participate in STEM activities and choose from the following options: Coding with Scratch (Kindergarten & up), Adventure Game Design (3rd & up), Animation / 3D Modeling (Kindergarten & up), Makers’ Workshop (3rd & up), Lego Robotics (Kindergarten & up), 3D Printing (3rd & up).
