As Brooklynites we pride themselves on the fact that we aren’t as school-obsessed as our fellow Manhattanites- yet we still talk about schools…a lot. It reminds me of the way we used to talk about real estate: what was the application process like? Which one offered you a place? How long will you stay there?
The school search is overwhelming. How do you gather information so that you can make an informed decision?
And, that’s how an idea was born: a San Francisco couple decided, having survived the preschool admissions process, to start a forum for parents to talk to parents about schools. This couple created The School Boards, an online network where parents can come together to ask questions, provide answers or offer advice on schools in their community.
The hardest part of getting a forum to work is getting a critical mass of people. For now, the Brooklyn school boards are silent, but between us all, we could probably get it going so that it worked for us.
